I haven’t heard anyone question on the news, what the loss of red diesel has added to the cost, and how much the government will get back in fuel duty alone.

More of a cash flow question. The higher fuel cost is income tax deductible, so cancel itself out. But the government gets the money a year quicker.

Now it seems they are planning to sell all the properties that they paid inflated prices for, why not simply rent them out until they change their mind & at some point & join up the two parts of the line.

On that @£70 billion is VAT which gives back £14 billion straight away.
Then there is Income tax , NI from the extravagantly paid staff who are probably mainly on 40%
I would think the true cost is nearer half the quoted!

Transport sec being ripped apart on bbc morning news, PM seems to have lied about the when the decision was made as a pre recorded vid statement had been made days before he said no decision had been made.
