I have a Husqvarna 357 chainsaw in otherwise good condition but the engine seems to have gone stiff to turn over and difficult to start .I m thinking it might mean a new piston and pot is it a easy DIY job or better to get a proper job done ? Thanks

What 2 stroke oil are you running? Wood boy here seized his new husky up and everyone told him it was because he was using stihl oil.,..., don't know if there's any truth in it though.

50:1 mix on Stihl,Husky,Oregon or whatever make of Synthetic two stroke oil. It really doesn't matter.
Does the chain turn while pulling the rope? Broken clutch spring if it does and will make it harder to pull over and start.
Usually if they tighten on the piston, they free up again when cool and have no compression afterwards. Bigger chance of having tightened on the crank if it's not just a broken clutch spring.

Just put a new piston in my Stihl, old one was scored to hell but cylinder was fine so thought it worth a gamble. £30 for piston and rings, £6 for mini bore honing tool and a quick look at a YouTube video of how to fit it... I was quite surprised when it worked, saw's back to its old self. Took an hour or so in total, bit fiddly but not difficult at all... got a knackered old Stihl 026 somewhere, tempted to have a go at that next!

Not true need to look at mix ratio of each brand

I'm running a Jonsereds version of a 550 on a 40:1 synthetic two stroke bought from Midlands Lubricants for not much more £ per litre than the price of the petrol. No problems yet.
Jonsered saws are a diferent breed to husky autotune ,,I've got a 2149 and it will run on any brand of 2stroke and the aspen premix ,,It's ni on indestructible

Alot of truth,,if it was an auto tune model then they won't run on anything else but husky 2 stroke mix.
The only reason some huskys won't run on any other oil than their own is if they are the oil guard? saws which have a sensor to pick up an additive in the oil. Technically the quality of oil used determines the amount needed. 2 local stihl/husky dealers here will both recommend stihl oil for husky saws they sell.

had a search and that oil guard system is fitted to the Husquvarna disc cutter's. No mention at all that it's fitted to chainsaws..a light detects the blue die colour of the two stroke oil. It's just to stop morons on building sites running them on neat petrol.

Not many building sites use husky brick saws ,,extremely rare to see one ,,they all use stihls because they are lighter .
That oil guard is a pita ,,they can only use the correct oil, even huskies own xp oil won't run,,seen alot of oil gaurd saws on ebay with problems

Got told yesterday by a service mechanic stay away from the Stihl auto tune they haven’t got it right, if it has three start positions and ones a triangle avoid, this was on a 462 managed to buy a normal carbed model, they tune them to the situation they’re in when tuned in summer but if you go running them in the winter they are a tw@ and because they’re electric they plug them in and see how many times they’re started idle time flat out revs etc and walk away from warranties. I’ve a 353 I re pistoned as it was scored because I’d lent it out and ran lean on mix.
Stihl oil is fine green has better stabilisers in than red if left for a longer period of time fueled up. Run hundreds of hours on green no issues saws backpack blowers brush cutters water pumps etc don’t start with that aspen crap though.

I didn’t mean for the oil guard detection, I meant that it is the best oil and we don’t see any problems if it’s being used, the new 2 strokes are running so lean to pass emissions that they need the best oil

Husky disc cutters can be got without oil guard but i guess any hire places probably use them.

Best for who? Manufacturer's and their dealers brainwash people into thinking that the only oil to use is their very own..at often an inflated price. It's just good marketing..the punter comes back to the dealer for his 2 stroke, then buys expensive chain oil, a new helmet etc etc..
