Hydraulic Hose Repair Cost?

@Grouse

Personally I price stuff before I order it. If I don't and I get shafted it is my problem. My fault. I will pay it. Perhaps you should have enquired before calling the firm out?
Secondly could there be something that you are being "fined" for? A comment on timekeeping or similar maybe? Or they don't want to work for you again? Or possibly your other business interests have offended the firm? While wrong it's not illegal to charge different people different rates.

Sorry but what trade hose supplier is going to anyone 1m of multi spiral hose! You tend to have to buy that sort of thing on a roll of at least 20m
And the tools to crimp said hose at there cheapest is £1500 but a proper hose fitter will probably have a much higher spec crimper on board at least double that cost. Then they will also have insurance to cover there arse if something went wrong after. Lots of hidden costs and lots of variation of hose spec and quality.

All hose repair vans charge top money and they can because all there core customers are plant hire firms or large building contractors or industrial, rare to see a hose van on a farm/agri.

Parquip Hose and Hydraulics Limited

Go to their online shop, one can buy a single meter or a full reel, at the same price pro rata. And fittings in any number required. And a fantasic friendly service.

As others have said, when you use this type of business you pay for the service.

You do however certainly pay more for the goods than you could at a retail trade desk.

However, retail trade desks don't:
Bring all the tools and fittings to your broken down machine
Remove and replace the hose
Generally reduce your downtime by half
And crucially wont be at the end of the phone at 10pm during harvest

I am pretty sure had that been a hose on a combine or baler at 10pm with rain forecast there would be no complaints.

Personality I support my local my local hose guy, even though i am fully aware i can by the goods cheaper elsewhere. Why - well its because I know when I phone him in a pickle, he will be there as soon as he can, day or night.

Agree a procurement framework. Just like all other large consumers do.

Agree a fixed pricing schedule in return for exclusive supply to the business, with whichever pricing model you both agree on.

Even small businesses manage it, but farmers tend to think of themselves as special.
Wrong, he asked for a price and the request was denied, if anything he should have refused the job til the price was forthcoming.

The hose in question wasn't expected to be cheaper than other alternatives and a £25 call out charge was applied to cover the man bringing the required tools fittings and pipe to the yard. The problem is when they charge circa £150 more for the pipe than the competition. They should be at least a little competitively priced with the materials the call out charge should cover for the convenience of them coming to you.

I've bought similar hoses from finnings over the counter from between £350 and £450, that's the price end of, I needed it so was happy to pay. fermers are there own worst enemy, they all think they can make it cheaper build it better or make it go faster, but in reality they tie everything with baler twine and look at it as proud as punch

that is a pretty familiar model of working used by many "emergency call out types" and others, separating the worker from the billing operation
I would recon 90% of workers are not privy to any billing costs/operations of a business, even I work all week then do billings at weekends, weeks for work, weekends for number crunching

I wouldn't expect them to either.

However in this day and age we have these contraptions called smartphones and tablets, this thing called a mobile network and something called the internet.

There should be no reason (other than not willing) for the chap or chick in the van to be able to generate an invoice for the customer just as easily as their compadres at the trade counter.

Heck these forward thinking, lean, unsubsidised, hardworking, profitable, actual real businessmen (and businesswoman can’t be sexist now) might even save some admin time, get their bills paid faster and improve their cash flow leading to more competitive prices, more customers more business and, and more profit!!

OMG, how about that for an proper grown up, big business idea?:p:cool::ROFLMAO:

Or they could just turn up, pretend they know nothing and severely overcharge a bloke for a fudgin hose!

For clarity father and son are in “partnership” and work together - undoubtedly the son would have an inkling of what their charges are and at the very least could have given a rough estimate.

I asked for a price and offered to pay there and then - I was fobbed off. The mistake I made was that I trusted him not to overcharge me.

Speaking to others in the area it’s not the first time this has occurred

Big storm developing in this thread and a little bit of unnecessary unpleasantness.
Enjoy your big house and expensive cars pay up, learn a lesson and move on. Don’t let what you see as an issue over £200 tear you apart.
If you still want to make something of it just enquiry politely if there was an error in the invoice. If they say no then take it on the chin and place your business where you want in future. If they acknowledge a mistake and reinvoice accept it graciously and let bygones be bygones.
You never know you might need them again one day in an emergency situation.

They never severely overcharged for a hose, that was their price and submitted it, and as for the hose generator web site linked on this thread 350bar is max hose rating, most excavators are pushing 6000psi, so £29.52 350 bar hose would be underrated.

Tbh I wouldn’t lose a moments sleep or make a fuss over being overcharged by this amount but I would make a mental note not to trade with them again. Not being a “ proper businessman” I would find it a hassle to price for every little service or part I use, sometimes you just have to trust people and the ones that take advantage of this will not receive further business and I have a long memory.
