Ifor brake repair

I have an old ifor LT85G 10x5' flatbed. It's a handy trailer but not used much. Anyway the brakes are knackered and not sure if repair is worthwhile or even doable.

How hard is it to replace the backplate?

It would really need backplates, shoes and cables. Possibly new wheels. Worth doing?

If you are fixing it you'd be cheaper (& easier) replacing the complete axles.

The other option is 're-assemble' what you have & trade it in against a decent used one at your 'local' IWT dealer
He'll have something up the back, he usually does & it will be guaranteed - probably be less than you expect to change.

Leaf springs shot too .............move it on....

My local dealer would sell me another but defo wouldn't take this as a trade in. I wouod probably stick it in local auction.

Not terribly difficult to do and not outrageously expensive either. Repaired mine recently and it seemed a lot cheaper than last time I did it.
Shop around on the internet for parts and price the job up. Decide from there.

How do the backplates come off?

Guessing yours is like this,welded on. Some are just bolted

The chassis does not look good
If that trailer was mine I would have put it in
Auction sometime ago
 
I had a similar conondrum with my 1992 dp120. Brakes were shagged, and the drawbar needed work. Did think of swapping it for a new/newer one, but my old dp120 was bought new with drop down sides, rear jacks and ramps. And I couldn't find a similar trailer second hand, but the brakes would still be an unknown. And new Ifor's aren't as good as the old ones.
So priced up parts. New backplates could be bought and welded on, drums, shoes, bits and cables could be bought cheaply, and parts for the drawbar could be had. But labour had to be put on top.
In the end I bought two axles off Ifor in Corwen for a smidge over £400 each ( not available anywhere else) I got them to throw a set of U bolts and cables in for that price.
I bought a brand new bradbury drawbar off the internet, somewhere in northern ireland for £230 (was cheaper than buying parts for the old one, and Ifor wanted £650 for a new one)
I got a local lad to swap the axles and drawbar over, and as I had new u bolts etc he cut the old ones off, the swap only took a couple of hours and £70.
I then advertised the two old axles and drawbar on facebook and had people falling over themselves to buy them and sold to the first person who turned up and paid what I asked as there was a dozen other people who wanted them.
The difference in towing is unbelievable it's like new, it hasn't towed this good in the last 20 years. Having new axles, brakes, bearings, drawbar etc means it will be good for another 20 years.
