infected calf ear

I was wondering what people do with calf ears that get infected from ear tag hole. We have had one grumbling along now for a fortnight. Spoke to vet on phone to seek advise , have been spraying up with purple spray. Injected with a long course of pen strep then Alamycin LA. We do not seem to be gaining. Still swollen even after squeezing puss out daily. Calf seems happy till we touch his ear. (that is). Not sure what the next step is ,Has any one had a vet cut the ear open and clean it up. Worries me how that could be done with all the veins. Or is it a continuation of antibiotics for longer.
