Introduce Yourself

James from Castle Donington on the Notts/ Leics/ Derby border.

We've got a 5ha cider apple orchard that we've established alongside the day job over the last four years in the hope it'll top up a pension in a few yrs time.

Probably one of the smaller holdings on here but we still have the same problems of soil, nutrient, water, etc management.

Learning as we go and just grateful to have a day job to keep it rolling along until it turns a quid!

Welcome. The more diversity, the better.

That’s pretty unusual for your area, are you intending to produce the cider yourselves

No, just grow is the plan. We've a local producer we can ship to and we're aiming to build an additional base of local craft producers as well.

You're right about us being a bit out of area but if you're north of Nottingham then we're a whole lot closer than Herefordshire.

Might produce a bit for home - we've got Perry trees so I'm up for a bit of that!!

Hi all!

I'm Jake and from Richmond in North Yorkshire. I'm a new entrant into agriculture after farming skipped a generation in my family. I am in my final year at the Royal Ag in Cirencester and then going on to be a trainee Dairy Farm Business Consultant (Whilst hopefully avoiding becoming the stereotypical know-it-all-know-nothing young consultant 😂). I try to have a go at everything so have dabbled in everything from beef and sheep to dairy, combinable crops and wine grapes!

Now then, only just seen this thread!

I’m Tom, 35 and from County Durham, my old man was a farm manager which is whereI got them interest from. I studied Land Management at Harper and now work as a local Land Agent (please don’t put this against me..!).

Always wanted to farm in my own right, brought a few inlambers once I had qualified and move back home, and now tackle working full time together with farming on the side running 100 ewes (mainly draft welshies) and 15 sucklers (mainly AA crosses).

It’s been a hard slog, plenty of mishaps, money pee'd up the wall but now rent a 50ac block with shed and own a bit ground too. I just now need to get it stocked to earn its keep...!

I find there are some useful threads and ideas, so quite enjoy the reads when I can’t sleep!

Welcome.

A land agent who actually farms, now there's a contradiction! :ROFLMAO:

Will be planting close to 3000 acres this spring and do some contract work if time permits. My land is unbelievably flat and is all black clay. Smallest field is 75 acres largest is 857.
Two kids 4 year old and a six. I’m 52 and feel every minute of it.

Yes we are snow covered but not by a great amount. The last two years have been dry here which is far from the norm. Crops have been very good considering how dry it’s been. Goes to show how important subsoil moisture is but that’s gone. If we don’t get back to timely rains we could be in for a challenging year. Difference between a drought and flood here only needs to be one big thunderstorm. Not uncommon for 6 plus inches in localized ares to drop.
