Only BBC Cymru has reported this so far but Iolo Owen, the breeder/pioneer of the Easycare breed has died aged 92.

Iolo was somewhat a mythical Welsh character and I'm sure there'll be a void in Ynys Môn and Wales following his passing.

Condolences to the Owen family.

I remember my sister and her husband speaking highly of him when they lived at Bodorgan.

Yep, easycares here; I think Iolo was one of the shrewdest businessmen you could have come across.

Only met him once when he bought the next door farm and planted it up in 2006.
I went to a lecture of his in Aberystwyth in the 60s. He spoke an awful lot of sense.

Knew him reasonably well.

One son, Tudor, has a Radio Cymru show and the other, Richard, farms on the original holding
Daughters in to hospitality and tourists.

Wrote a book a few years ago about his life.

Good tribute here:

Love the quote from the man himself.

"I have had a long and interesting life during which I have made mistakes, but hopefully I have not made them twice"

I only found out he was Tudur's dad on the radio today, It was quite a shock 😲.

Tudur Owen did a show about his dad, opening a zoo on Anglesey, who turns out to be Iolo.

Worth a listen to for anyone who's interested in the man.

P.s. Tudur is the funniest radio presenter out there, bar none, it's just a shame most people don't speak Welsh so cant understand him 🤣.

I met him at Worcester Market many years ago when there was an Easycare sale on, we were window shopping at the time but have now got only Easycares.

We had a long chat, he surprised me a lot by saying he knew exactly were we farmed South of Colchester as he had driven his sheep past our farm for many years when bringing them down to Essex for tack all the way from what Balders insists is the Sainted Isle.

He took my phone number there and rung me 2 years later to ask how I was getting along with the sheep despite the fact that I didn't buy any from him and sourced them locally.

A clever and lovely man.

A true pioneer and businessman who foresaw the trends in the market long before many did. The increasing popularity of his breed (and the ones which followed and built on it) is testament to his vision.

My family from Halton Farm have known him for years. My husband and I stayed in one of the farm cottages a couple of years ago. This was my husbands last holiday. He died in January this year. We send condolences to all the family. Margaret.

Chapel was pretty much full and folks behind my pew were, by the sounds, from the Easycare Society.
Tudur gave the eulogy with humour and a very touching tribute including an amusing story about his father's negotiating technique:
"How much? 150? Well I'm not paying more than 120"
"135?.No, you're way off"
"125? You drive a hard bargain but we will settle at that"
Turned out he was negotiating with the Times Wine Club ....
And the story of when Farmers Weekly wrote their first article on Easycares under the headline: "Is this the future for sheep?"
To which Iolo had added in biro "Yes"

RIP
