It seems you can now use an ipad with soyl variable rate application plans www.isoyl.com,

This seems much better than the 'blackbox' I hired from soyl this year.

I run an android wifi tablet but I know little about ipads and less about mobile data plans. I think an ipad mini is suitable running os7.1.

So Im looking for advise on were to source a compatible ipad (used or new) and what data card to choose. Data would only be needed in the spring fertiliser months so not wanting a yearly/monthly data plan.

Also a ram mount type product for the tractor cab?

Also is there a suitable record keeping app to further utilise the ipad. fert and spray records etc

many thanks

Dont buy an expensive 3G or G4 iPad - just pair it with your phone IF you need real time data. Ideally you just download what you need over wifi in advance - you do not need 3G for GPS.

EG free wifi on a train, go to maps and see exactly where you are moving along

You know you can buy GPS receivers that have Bluetooth tech. Whether they have the accuracy or not I don't know.

My dual constellation, dual frequency RTK base includes a Bluetooth "serial port" (the device could be used as an RTK capable receiver). The accuracy is there but I'm afraid Apple doesn't allow iPads to use any third party GPS via bluetooth?

If you already have an Android tablet you might want to try a second hand iPad? Especially the 3G models are a fair bit more expensive. It seems the original RAM mount is still the best. Have seen cheap copy's that don't last in a tractor.

I don't know about record keeping stuff. There is a German initiative 365 Farm Net that combines data from various makes. Don't know if there is anything going on in the UK. My experience is that it's all very difficult.

Apple doesn't allow third party bluetooth indeed sadly. Don't know if this has changed with the newest iPads though.

Look at FAQ. Someone told me it was £450! wanted to check if this is correct.

Met my SOYL rep last week to discuss smart sampling. He ran through the new iPad based system with me. Cables are expensive because they have to be approved by Apple if a company like SOYL is to support them. Of course you could use a non genuine version & at that price it's certainly going to stimulate off patent copies. How would you cope with it if it went wrong though?

A cynical view might be that the cartel of GPS equipment manufacturers aren't releasing their grip easily - there's too much invested in having exclusive hardware that won't talk to any thing else. The Vaderstad iPad tie up was the first of the new generation of tablets to really break this cartel. Why not have specialist peripherals & a central tablet or PC controlling everything? This has been the norm in offices for years now.

Wifi control in tractors..... Aargh! My phone Always syncs with my iPad as does my laptop.... Not!!!!

I'd love wifi control, It would make my job easy when fitting...
However, how would you charge the screen??? Would an iPad running GPS last all day? Mine on sat nav(Tom Tom) lasts about three hours. So you'd still have wires going to receiver, screen and ecu for power. But the future looks exciting
