The first referendum could just have been ignored by Cameron if he had had any guts, it was only advisory with no legal standing.

Cameron dropped both nuts at once.
What he should of done was..........
Declare we were leaving.
Issued article 50.
Waited a year for the proverbial to hit the fan.
THEN call a referendum.
Remain would of walked it.

I do not remember such a discussion at the time, however to regard it as otherwise would be political suicide for the party that reneged on a clear statement of public opinion

Entirely correct, and a not very surprising advocation to ignore a democratic vote from a supporter of the EU. However, on that rather dangerous and stupid basis, if that referendum result could have been ignored, why not those in the Irish, French & Dutch referenda? Or are they valid and fit to stand unchallenged because they - eventually and under duress - fell in with the EU?
