Why doesn't the door go all the way down to the floor?

They seem to stop about a foot above it, then there's either a gap or what I assume is a rubber sheet. Been wondering about this for years.

to stop them bending the door when they tip.

Do you mean backing it against the pit?

Edit: I see what you mean now, with the swinging door. I've only ever used auto doors. Thanks.

Before hydraulic doors we had doors hinged 2' forwards,the weight of the door shut them but also allowed the door to lift as it tipped.

And if a bit off grass is left on the rear of trailer from driver lowering trailer to fast the door still slams shut
