had someone asking how much water i could put through our sprayer the other day as they where toying with the idea of putting some water on S Barley, i told him he'd be better off with a slurry tanker but only if he had a god supply of water, i know there'll be a calculation somewhere but how much water/Ha does it take to get to 1mm of rain ???

Is it about 10,000l/ha for 1mm?

I don’t know for certain, just some fag packet, probably inaccurate, maths whilst watching boom irrigator decide how it’s going to spoil my day today.

irrigation with crop sprayer is a waste of time, tried it before when desperate and it was an exercise in making us feel like we were doing something and no more. Evaporated as quick as it was applied.

I think 10,000 l/ha is 1mm

1 inch of rain is equivalent too 10k gallon to the acre I’m sure somebody told me once? Either way you dump that amount of water on a field and it’ll run off that’s why you want it doing with an irrigator really as it spends all day doing one pass so the ground has time too soak it up rather than it run off

Seen someone trying it with the sprayer to get a late patch to germinate it all they ended up with was a few of deep tramlines and fair bit of bare ground.

I've seen us do an odd patch here and there with the slurry tanker bit I'm talking about like 0.5 an acre at most

It's a long time since I did any irrigation, but think that right.

I remember a farmer trying to water culinary swedes with slurry tanker in 1976...it was not very successful and the water source was a spring outlet used to supply watercress beds and my domestic supply. I was not entirely happy that with the faeces encrusted tanker pipe being dipped into my water supply,.

Father has suggested we could irrigate some of our land with a slurry tanker (we have a large pond). Personally I think it’s a bit crazy - bit we are seriously short of grass. Any thoughts? A used 2000 gallon tanker isn’t big money..

It’s big money when you put 120+hp on the front, a man on the seat, fuel in the tank and need to put 5 loads minimum to the acre on too make a difference

I was taught 100 tons of water is 1 inch/ acre
Which is equal to your 254 tonnes/ha.
So we both agree that waiting for a shower is a lot easier.
