So most people on here are saying he is mad due to being tied to the cow's tail twice a day. But what if he milked 170 Jerseys OAD on a block calving system?
when are you going to take the leap and rent or buy your own place. You and Jimmer seem to work very hard for other people to reap the benefits.
I'm being sincere.
I believe he manages the dairy cows, but is passionate enough to treat it as his own.I thought Jimmer owed his farm?
@Steakeater I'd suggest that your mate should work for another 10 years, it's not that long and he'll still be young. There will still be cows and farms then, and he'll have plenty of money saved for a pension.
Everyone forgets that there are people making money in dairy and lots. However, they tend to a) Moan less (people tend to shout more about the job being crap than good), b) keep their heads down & c) Have a lower profile as they spend less, so you hear less about them.
If everyone is going one way, perhaps it isn't such a bad thing to go the other? Certainly it's (or was it's getting more expensive) a good time to buy dairy kit and cows, and there are lots of processors looking for milk at the moment. Invest for the future, as the price tends to have wild swings, so you will be well set for any price rises.
Working like a dog might be what the blokes after? Some people like working hard and that's their pleasure and if they make good money that's a bonus.
If he is actually earning 60k in an office under 30 then he must be a high flyer. All I can assume he's in Sales or part of an elite IT team. I cant think of many office jobs that pay that high with little experience so either he is on the road a lot (under huge stress), in intense Sales (prestigious cars etc- long hours) or there is a bit of artistic licence going on. I have worked in prestigious car garage and in engineering consultancy and only the Sales job would come near that.
However, people who are very motivated and talented can find ways of making money and these are the people that farming needs perhaps he could sit on the board of the NFU and do some good PR?
Unless he has a long term lease on paper, in his hand, he may find a few change in life's goals by then anyway. He will be near 40 then, life goals can change a lot by the time you hit that age!
There are graduates who earn 50k in London!
On 60K he's in the higher tax bracket so take home is nearer 40k. Add pension contributions and NI, probably nearer 35k. Consider London area rents, commuting costs etc it's not surprising he'd give it up. Better to earn below the supertax limits unless you're on megabucks.
Why is everyone so hung up on how much money could be earned?
