Is livestock farming classed as essential work?

With a lot of lambing work and pre lambing work on the horizon will we be restricted by law attending to such duties with this escalating carry on going?
Not in a ring fence!

Mostly family here working too. Some other staff though. It’s moving around I’m concerned about

Unless you get ill and need to self isolate you will be able to move between farms/ get supply's and so forth.

If they shut down farmers/ contractors moving between blocks of land over the next few weeks there will hardly be any winter feeds like silage/ grain next winter let alone the massive welfare issue with livestock that cannot be looked after when they are calving/ lambing etc.

I can't see them stopping you going round attending to your stock. What might be more of an issue is your staff going off sick, self-isolating, having childcare issues etc.

On this point, with schools shutting it's only the children of key/essential workers plus 'vulnerable' kids that they will provide some sort of daycare facility for. It's not really an issue for me, as my wife is a nurse and so the kids will be able to use this facility (they weren't too chuffed when we told them this last night :ROFLMAO:). If I can't make it in to work, and my boss can't send a replacement, the slaughterhouse where I work cannot operate. Shelves are getting bare. So where does their definition begin and end? Am I included?

What’s your roll at the slaughterhouse that renders it useless without your presence ? Surely this is a risky policy at the best of times ? You have e them over a barrel for a kings ransom?

I'm the Official Veterinarian. If myself or a colleague aren't there to check the stock, then they can't be killed for human consumption. Also, two meat inspectors are required and there's a relatively small pool of licensed slaughtermen to do the actual killing and stock handling. So a small number of key absences could stop them operating.

My roll at the slaughterhouse this morning was a very large one with ham, cheese, cucumber and coleslaw :D

Lol maybe they could introduce special circumstances ? Or find another vet ? My vet did that for years so he could step in ?

We aren’t too bad as far as the kids go oldest lad works here full time 11 year old will be of use here while he’s off school, 4 year old can spend her time in lambing marquees, coming with me or my mother, wife’s mother. Also had offers from lasses at nursery who are off work now but need some cash to keep their households going so job is a goodn in that respect up until now.
What you are telling me frightens me more!
Or is there some Spanish/South African or other vets here to draft in? Even if they could come it wouldn’t be straight forward I imagine

Surely to god if things got serious they could give dispensation to slaughter without a vet present ? I’d be more worried if the slaughter man didn’t turn up.
