Is the Public really bothered about farming....

What does the look of the fields matter?

I spoke to a local arable farmer about putting stock in his rotation. All he would talk about was how he didn’t want a mess and it has to look good.

I decided outdoor lambing shedders on his ground was a bad idea and we haven’t done any business.
Do you cut and comb your hair
I read with interest about these farms digging trenches to keep vermin out . The 2 legged type . What a mess it looks but unavoidable in their situations

Its the landlord that's taking it off us to plant. We make a living off it. So get your facts right you wise arse

Without wishing to fan the flames if you have a landlord it is not a family farm - its a rented farm.

Since it belongs to him he is not taking it off you and since you are obviously not in favour it would seem that the terms of your lease allow him to regain effective control of the areas he intends to plant.

I am sorry you have been affected in this way but that's life.

Ah now we get to the truth of the issue. It’s not your family farm. It’s a farm your family happen to rent.

If you can make more money than trees you will be able to pay more rent then the landlord won’t be interested in planting it. Can you?

Their planting it for the grants and BPS.
What do you farm??

I don’t farm anything.

I’m a livestock contractor. Mainly sheep, but also beef and dairy.

My core work currently is wintering hill sheep. This is under threat as subs are reduced, as I believe my customers will reduce flock size rather than winter away hill ewes without subs.

I’ve spent the last few years investing in equipment which will allow me to run stock on arable farms. I have no emotional attachment to a specific place and will move where I need to in order to make my business a success. I foresee a demand for livestock within arable rotations going forward.

My skill set allows me to work outside of agriculture and I have some investment income streams as well.

Their breaking up viable farms planting big bits of them leaving what's left not big enough

No, they are redeploying their assets in areas where they feel a higher return can be achieved. It's called business.

I appreciate it's having an effect on you or your family that you weren't expecting, but you cannot control private enterprise on the basis of it upsetting the odd person. This is a democratic country based largely upon capitalism.

Sure it does. Protection of private property rights is a cornerstone of our civilisation.

Ok lets be gentle here - there are plenty of cases where the letter of the law is less than naturally just, there is a balance to strike between tenants and landlords and the balance is a little different between the two countries.

Nobody likes losing thier job - its happened to me several times and it was not much fun at all.

In this case we are possibly looking at a significant re-organisation and its not to be wondered if that is a hard pill to swallow, although his arguments could be better expressed.
