Is Trump Right About Free Trade

So finally we have some recognition into what Government policies in the Western world have done.

Liberals moved jobs from the West to China to build stuff cheap for rich people in Western cities .. whilst the majority lost out wholesale the rich were not only not affected, they got goods cheaper and made money on the imports.

Do you mean the rich people who have iPhones and all the latest gadgets? The rich and not rich are equaled in this respect precisely because the stuff is made in China.
All the stuff like clothing, haberdashery, electronics, tools are afforded by the masses precisely because of low cost manufacturing.

You can bring it all back to UK and USA etc, but nobody will be able to afford it, except the wealthy.

That shipped has sailed. Stop whimpering about it.

Nothing to do with the thread. And I quite like Mr Trump for his entertainment value. But todays cartoon has really made me chuckle so thought would share it for those who do not take The Times. Peter Brookes at his best. Best wishes all keep up the posting.

The best electronics are made in Taiwan, Japan & USA.

iPhones are stuck together with glue in China .. because the workers are cheap, so cheap it's worth polluting the air with 1000s of miles of transport pollution whilst taxing companies in the UK £ millions in taxes.

Fake politics created by the self centred, never wanted and never asked for.

The problem you have Ashtree is you're just plain ignorant.

Tone dear boy tone!!!

Which type of device did you use to make this post, and all your other ones???????????????

No need to answer that! No matter what it is, and where it’s finish assembled, the vast guts of the electronics are made in China!

Suppose you didn’t want it and you didn’t ask for it. It just landed in your lap.

You didn’t know that, or perhaps you just overlooked the fact. That’s ok. We all make mistakes.

I won’t lower myself however, to calling you ignorant.

What a wally.

I make PC's.

My CPU comes from Taiwan as does the memory. The case is American. The software is American. The screen is Taiwan. My mouse & keyboard are made in China.

Chinese electronic components are low quality .. top quality components are Japanese - you don't spend £1000 on a video card to get it fail in 6 months.

Electronic circuits are manufactured by machines - in fact they are placed by robots and the soldering is done by ovens using a heating and cooling curve to improve reliabilty.

Elon Musk sides with Trump on USA car exports to China paying 25% tax whilst imports to USA only get 2.5% tax.

EU puts 10% tax on USA cars.

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/03/08/elo...-25-percent-import-duty-on-american-cars.html

Trump doesn't shout about the pick up truck market though. Very important segment in USA with huge sales volumes.
Ford Europe would like to ship some Rangers to Trump, and VW would like to ship him some Amaroks.
Trouble is US charges 25% import tariff, making it a no go.

So in short US charges 2.5% on European cars, and 25% on European pick up trucks.
EU charges a flat 10%.

Swings and roundabouts, eh!

President Trump has asked Wilbur Ross to engage in trade talks with the EU with a view to equalizing tariffs on auto's coming in to the USA, I am guessing that if the EU lose the 7.5% difference in rate charged between trading blocks then maybe there could be some concession on steel and aluminum..?

My guess was Trump is playing a confidence game with the EU.

USA has little to lose, which is obvious given the numbers, so Trump will keep piling on the pressure to see who buckles first. My guess is only so many will get a reasonable deal .. all the rest will have to lump it. Trump only needs trade with a few major partners so that's the play.

IMHO Germany & China are the main targets and their markets. UK would be a great export market at the expense of Germany.

With the UK export market in doubt for the EU Trump needs to play the EU hardball.

Oil & Gas increasing with the USA as a major exporter, so numbers looking good.

Great export market for what? Much as a fancy a Ford Mustang I don't see it, or any US based vehicle ever being much of a seller in the UK..

Tesla looks pretty good.

I don't know how they are doing on their cheaper mass production model. Looks goods, does the electric stuff and has plenty of toys.

They found one of the original "Bullit" cars in storage, using it in ads alongside the new 50th anniversary edition Bullit Mustang, driven by Steve Maqueens grandaughter.

A proper car, but serious money nowadays. In the late 70's I was working in Italy and was offed a nice one for about £500 by a German student I knew who needed some money. I didn't bother in the end as I was worried about the cost of running back to the UK.:banghead::banghead:
