I have just put a new throttle cable on my 530 70 but cant seem to set it up right if it idles at around 800 rpm it will only rev to about 1800 rpm if i get to rev to about 2000 rpm it idles to fast . what should it rev up to . any idea how to get it right .and out of interest what is the switch on the throttle linkage under the cab.

Check the space under the accelerator pedal, under the cab floor. There's a dip in the fuel tank to accommodate the pedal being depressed and it fills up with soil and dirt and prevents the accelerator pedal going far enough to the floor. Clear out the crud and you'll have extra top end revs. I had exactly the same issue with my 530/70, I too adjusted the throttle cable because I thought that was the problem, and had the same issue of too fast idle speed.

I haven’t a clue what it looks like but if it’s a Bowden cable type thing can you adjust where the outer is mounted at either end it sounds like your running out of stroke

Is it identical too the old one? Did the old one break or get stiff? Or does either end of it connect too a arm with a few different holes and it’s in the wrong one and loosing travel?

look to see of the pedal is bottoming out on the tank, the tanks swell up and reduce the pedal travel, as well as blocking up with crap.

Also most have a spring on the end of the cable, if the throttle arm on the injector pump is too stiff which is common on a Delphi pump then the spring on the cable will stretch out before the throttle arm has reached its stop. Also 800 rpm is too low anyway, you want about 900rpm.

if its a non turbo then max revs should be about 2200 rpm and its a turbo then 2400 rpm. A 530-70 is going to be 1998 to 2002 ish? very common on this age for the tanks to swell out due to boost diaphragm in the injector pump failing and the turbo pressures the tank. The fixes are cutting a bit off a bracket under the cab on the throttle and or adding a couple of washers under the cab mounts or fit a new tank.

I had same prob with a 2004 540 industrial spec. In the end I gave up and set it about the middle. Was convinced the replacement cable was half inch shorter than original but parts dept were adamant it was 1 size fits all. it’s a fiddly awkward beggar of a thing t get at too.

Got it sorted now i had set the cable under the cab the same as the old one with the nuts holding very close to the end so tilted the cab abit this afternoon and put the nuts further up the thread and now have it right idle at 900 and revs to 2350 . i guess the cable must of stretched a bit over the years and it had been adjusted out there .
