JCB 536-60 Fault Code u040d-54

So we've recently changed our handler to a 536-60, 2013 with 5000 hours and we are getting this Fault code (u040d-54). Where we brought it from knew about it and were going to sort it and thought they did but it has come back.

I know that the code means - Can communication error: VGT spanlearn

So other threads on here say it is linked to the Turbo/Actuator. They tried a new Actuator on it before we had it but the code still came up. He then put the old one back on and the code went so he thought maybe it was a wire/plug that was causing the issue. A few days after we received the machine it is back on. But there is a pattern with it. It only come on first thing in the morning and after stopping and starting usually 2 times it goes and never comes back on in the day unless stopped for a long time. I can live with it but it is annoying as there is reduced power when the code is on. Machine runs perfectly otherwise and when the code isn't on it has full power and pulls up hills in top gear no problem.

Just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and what did you do to solve it? Thanks.

From your description it sounds heat related. - i.e. a connector plug at the ECU or the turbo. I'd be inspecting the connectors for proper seating, any green crusties on the pins and then doing a drag test on the two connectors.

The ECU multiplug is not easy to access. You'll need a workshop manual to identify the relevant pins at the ECU.

Given their ought to be some form of warranty I'd not go further than this. Presume they are a JCB dealer and have tried a re-learn of the VGT??

Ok cheers. Not a JCB dealer but did say he would have the handler back but we came to an agreement on having some money off it. There is another code that is on all of the time but doesn't make any difference to performance and that is C1582-87 and when I googled it said ECU pairing fault whatever that means so your idea of it being the ECU plug could be along the right lines.

Probably worth you having nearby JCB dealer come out to it for a diagnostic and go from there.

Thanks, mine is going fine sometimes and is in limp mode others, so not convinced that the actuator is faulty, may try to replace the sensor, wherever it is?

Thanks, is that the probe with a fine wire down the centre. Have removed it and cleaned it a few times, covered in soot. Must be cheaper than the actuator!!

Have the new injectors been coded to the ECU, and what "new" injectors are they? What's rail pressure in live data during cranking?
