Hi all,
After peoples thoughts and experiences on the 2256 JD hillmaster. Good, bad and ugly? Any independent jobs agricultural engineers in Kent, that people would recommend?
Cheers

2258 level land here was a great machine to use and service. Bubble auger seal can go allowing dust into the bearing by the bevel gears. Other than that lack of header tilt was the only real issue. I had mine for about 8 seasons having bought it secondhand .It was using a fair bit of engine oil by the time I traded it in. Hill master on the replacement t550 is a good bit of kit. I think the 2256 was slightly lower horsepower but otherwise the same.

Had a 2256 brilliant combine. The gears for the bubble up can be an issue but our man with a van filled it up with grease and fitted grease nipples to top it up. Quietened it down considerably, never had any trouble just routine servicing and an odd belt and bearing. My experience of second hand combines is you usually have a big spend on its pre season service as something say the drum bars or concave need attention and the previous owner has known that its the combines last season with him so skimped a bit for that season. So once that initial service is done its a fairly cheap combine to run

Thanks solo and spider. Replacing a mf36rs so hp should be the same. Thanks for the tips on the bits to look out for.
I don't suppose anyone knows of jd independent fitters in the Kent area that can do a pre purchase inspection?

As above, we had one of the first years 2256 hillmasters from new until last year. easy to look after and very little trouble. The idler half-way along the chopper belt drive was a little prone to bearing trouble, slacken belts and you can hear. We wore through the plastic grain pan trays eventually. I think I heard they were a bit prone to wiring issues if stood about outside too much....ours was housed and not a problem. Always liked to crack barley a bit. If the 550w does 21 years with as little trouble I will be more than happy. Oh yes, never lost more than a part day with a breakdown.

Been running a 2001 2256 HM after a 1177, this year will be my 4th season with her. Love it! She will just motor on and have found a 20ft header to use in dry corn and will use the 16ft in crimp corn. Compared to the 1177 it's just as simple to spanner.. Only thing it's lacking is afew more ponies when chopping on banks, but may open pump a touch- the engine and driveline is the same through to the 2264. 2266 has a slightly different spec engine and larger cooling pack.

We do our own winter maintenance and have been right through it -despite having a JD fitter as previous owner-doing age related stuff rather than broken stuff. Done all the belt tensioner pulley bearings last winter & changed the main threshing drive multi v-belt..

Currently got the bubble up auger out to re-flight and will do the drive g/box bearing & seal whilst its out - the auger's only slightly worn but as we do alot of 30% crimp corn you need all the auger you can get to avoid blocking the clean grain elevator.

Not found the wiring looms to be weak or poor quality, but will surcome to vermin if not cleaned off properly / moth balls etc . Under the tank fills with chaff and theres a big loom there, under the drivers seat, and under the dash similarly, also a loom that runs under the fan casing. These must be regularly cleaned, and left open covers off over winter. The Electrical cupboard can get damp and I open that up to breathe also.

Any more specific detail on what to look for- pm me as could go on almost indefinitely on here! Tidy ones are about , but you've gotta search for them

Hi all. Late to this trend. I’m in the market for a clean 2256/2258. Must be hillmaster as my ground is very hilly. If anyone knows of any or could send me in the right direction I’d be grateful. Thanks

Morris corfield, hereford have a '58, 18ft header, do not know conditoon nor hours.

I would check out any of the barclay family dealerships, they all used to have a big array of combines advertised
Sharmans was one think another was Netherton tractors and they used to have a couple more off shoot trading names as well
