John Deere 6400 electrical problem (pto)

We have a 1996 John Deere 6400 and when you engage the pto it blows the pto fuse (f119)
Have checked the switch, pto solenoid and speed sensor wires. We can’t find the rear pto relay.
Have had the panel off alongside fuses and three top panels above the fuses but no sign of it. Can’t find where switch wires, pto solenoid and speed sensor wires connect to, the tractor does not appear to have a seat switch.
Any help greatly appreciated

I seem to think that a 96 will be a pre BCU model? In which case there will be 2 or 3 small relays at the bottom of fuse box that work the pto.
I’d start by unplugging the pto solenoid and see if it still blows the fuse if it does i’d continuity test the live wire at the solenoid and see if it’s grounded. Chances are if it’s not the solenoid it will be a wire rubbed through on a machine that age.

If it’s like the Deutz swapping the solenoids will work but they are different solenoids
Pto is a feather start the diff ones on and off would knacker something if you keep using it that way

All same solenoid on the early jd’s so can swap them about. Although the mfwd one on some later models has a bigger coil. Also you now have to buy a one piece unit/replacment (coil/valve) so can’t just swap the coils around.

If it doesn’t blow the fuse with the solenoid unplugged then the coil has gone. You could swap it with the mfwd or diff lock to get you going.
Well please to say that the pto is working after doing as you suggested and swapped the diff lock solenoid with the pto solenoid, so thanks.

next question is would you or anyone recommend purchasing a new solenoid off eBay for £170 or one from John Deere for £430….

There is places that fix them but won’t cost a lot I don’t know where these places are
