John Deere reducing dealerships

Nick, it’s a franchise type operation these days so corporate image is key. It’s widespread across the commercial world; in fact the Ag’ industry has been lagging behind many other industries in this regard. Eventually I see a time when as a farmer you’ll be visiting the dealers to buy product as you would a car, motorbike etc. Hence the better facilities some dealers are now developing. There will still be an element of on farm visits where that is essential like fixed installations for example but for mobile and tractor mounted machinery, this can all be seen at the dealers. Visits to view trade ins will still have to be done as I don’t see you dragging used machinery into the dealers just to get a valuation. Maybe I’m wrong and many colleagues disagree with me but times are a changing. (Even in Norfolk! ?)
Unfortunately I’m coming to the conclusion that the quality of service from a dealer is inversely proportional to the amount spent on the premises.

Don’t doubt what your saying about the future trade with dealers but I think a good lot of reps will be working from home after this doing quotes etc and only going to the depot when they need to meet people to look at stuff, talking to someone in the trade he cannot believe how much more work he’s getting done by not being disturbed by people calling for a coffee when they pick up some parts.Dealers will change after this that’s for sure

40 years ago we were all mf 5 dealers within 15 miles and they were very competative was good for all they all sold plenty. there were more farmers spreading the trade about great today we are on border of 2 dealers 25 miles each way neither of which i whish to trade with!
On the other side of this coin 40 years ago there were approx 35k dairy producers in England and today there are approx 10k maybe a bit less, so 63% reduction so almost the same % reduction as you state within the local dealer trade. It’s the way of the world.

I was told HRN were on for Fendt and Valtra!!!
More interested in who is going to take on JD.
Personally I think that JD have dropped a major clanger in the North of Scotland, they had a good dealer with a loyal customer base, who are in no mans land just now till something is announced.

I agree! if HRN only had 1/3 of the turnover JD demanded there isn’t another dealer big enough to even look near that! I can see the north changing colour a lot with this decision. Especially if HRN do get Fendt and Valtra, they were starting to make ground on JD up here anyway and with the size of the HRN loyal customer base that’s only going to accelerate that!

Did Neil, tell you that too?

Who dropped who? I wouldn't be surprised if they told JD to do one because of there constant demands.

Bit confused. Sharmans to stop selling JD 31/10/20. Case dealers as of 24/4/20.
are they dual dealership until 31/10/20, or as I suspect relinquished the JD dealership early & are Case only dealers

I would be surprised. Very rich family.
No sign of anything on shareholder list at companies house.

JD finance the working capital of their dealers in the form of stock funding for all new units most used units and hire fleets

That's how they control the franchisees can take it all away in 3 months if you don't tow the line.

Not this time, the Fendt Valtra comment was somebody guessing I'd say.
Was speaking to my rep the other day and he doesnt know, or if he does, he should be up for an Oscar!! :D :D

As I said way back on here, HRN told JD enough, after some of their demands. That came from the boss.
Reading between the lines, it seemed like a game of brinksmanship was going on with both sides reckoning on the other backing off, which didn't happen.
When you watch Millienial farmer and similar videos on youtube, and see the JD scale over there, and other bits of the world, I don't suppose a few less tractors in North Scotland really matters to them.
