Wastewaters from baths, showers, washing machines and dishwashers will all go down one pipe into the sewers in London. The London sewage system also takes stormwaters away. Virtually nobody sends any of their rainwater into soakaways. When an area becomes flooded, Thames Water are blamed.
Yes and with a growing population Water Companies have failed to keep up with the size of treatment plants and use the "overloaded" as an excuse . Sewage treatment is basically Settlement , Aeration , Bacterial Breakdown so it only has to be scaled up.

It isn't just "older properties" - it's just about all properties, especially in towns & cities! Just pop over to the Plumbing Forum & see how many queries there are about connecting everything to a single stack.
Just explain how the water companies can separate the grey, foul & storm water from the sewers within every street in the land - this is a monumental exercise to achieve, virtually none of which is within their control.
Personally I'm a lot more concerned about nano plastics in the rivers & seas, all of which pass through traditional sewage treatment processes, as do phosphates...
