Keeping Manitou greased up.

Roughly how regularly should I aim to grease a new Manitou, it’s our first handler and I want to keep well on top of it.

It doesn’t do huge hours per month but several people have suggested to keep it well greased so....?

Set yourself a diary, I do all major lifting nipples when filling up as that takes about ten mins on my pump and then every Sunday I do king pins and swivel joints ect then every three weeks I do majors so UJ and half shafts. Takes me about an hour to do telehandler, tractor and yard machinery every three weeks. Once you get into the habit it becomes very easy as you know where everything is and you'll develop a 'loop' round them

The diary sounds like a really good idea, you generally find as it's the one machine going every day and driven by anyone the maintenance gets overlooked as everyone assumed the last person did it.
I would suggest a really good grease like the blue grease so it sticks to the pins longer

It's so easy, as me and dad (him very rarely) drive it, we just put a tick for the weekly, two ticks for the mid and three for the major on the day it's been done. I'm going to get in a lot of trouble for this but have said on the 'smoking policy' thread, I just spark a fag and tick the book. I'm a creature of habit in many ways :ROFLMAO:

Put a grease gun on your farm fuel tank than every time you fill up with fuel you can grease the headstock at least,

We have a grease gun on every bit of kit and each has a new cartridge with it, bought some gun hangers off eBay dirt cheap and mounted them near the door so you can't forget to use them. Very hand for out in the field ect

Both our machines are greased every fill up with fuel. That way if they're working harder they get greased more often. Takes less than 10.mins with a battery gun.

Back axle - lift the machine with puh n block wood so the weight is off the pivot before you grease it.

Bottom main lift ram and king pins and top of self levelling ram want doing regular as clock work.

Use decent grease. I'm liking Fuchs lithium moly at the minute. Been using it on everything.

And for boom pads either run dry or spray with dry moly lube. Drys like paint so dont get messy.

Oh and dont forget the propshafts! All the ujs are nice sealed ones but the telescope slide still has a greaser on it and the need doing or the splines get chewed up.

Little and often is the best way.
And take weight off lift ram before greasing it.

Cant beat regular maintenance for the cost of the machines nowadays its worth taking the time to make sure things are lubed properly, a lot of our local customers use Fuchs grease over the cheaper brands as they swear by it.

Thanks for all the info.

I’ll aim to do it every 50 hours, as per the book. Was fairly easily done once I’d located all the nipples. Some of them buried under crap on the headstock.

I use Fuchs grease cause I got fed up with swearing at others not having a solid lip at top of cartridge!

Getting low on them actually so need to order a couple boxes.
