Kerosene V Gas oil

Neighbour rang me saying they have run out of Kero. Asked for some red diesel to tide them over.

Forums advice?

Should work ok. I think the burner will need tweaking for a clean burn.

Going to have to put a bit of the same in mine to stretch it out till Thursday delivery. Done it a bit before without a problem, helped by the fact there’s always some left at the bottom of the tank for it to mix with.

It’ll burn cherry twice as fast as kero without a different nozzle I expect. It’ll be fine though.

Only time we tried it there was even more black smoke than our Ford 5000 used to pour out.

If it’s set for kero probably won’t light and if it dose burn wrong .

A small percentage is fine, and actually advised in some boilers to lubricate the pumps.. (kero is very Dry) 50/50 will maybe smoke a little (wrong nozzle) but wont do lasting damage.

Not a good idea, pump pressure needs to increase to atomize the lower grade fuel to give a correct burn. If its a modern burner then they are not designed to run on red.
Be prepared for a sooty boiler and the pain of cleaning it out, especially if its in the house. Soot gets everywhere, even when you know what your doing

Short term to tide you over you should get away with it, but anything more than 50:50 mix and you most likely will have issues

seen it done once, their boiler blew up running on red diesel. lasted about a day, expensive lesson.

I’ve done it no problem 100 ltrs of red in when tank nearly empty to tide us over boiler just a year old seemed to cope fine

A friend told me that a Combi-boiler will run fine for years on red diesel, it just needs a different nozzle to run cleaner. That would have been back in the days when kerosene was dearer than cherry of course.

The boiler will burn hotter, the flame will be longer and smokier. It is not a good idea except in emergency, will soon soot up and burn out the tank.
