Knotter problems on New Holland square baler

@Hesston4860s - thanks ... interesting. String tension from the string box, or on the bale?

Maybe should have said... After I finished the bales I wanted, I tried baling some damp coarse stuff round a shady edge, just to get it out of the road really, but then it will as back to problems straight away. Might this indicate a string tension issue?

With a change of crop, sounds like hay dogs, are they all working freely now? stripper arms may need adjusting they can appear to be really loose with wear, can the knotter stacks move freely or has the pin holding them to the frame been replaced with a bolt, you will have to find something else to bale just so we can all keep coming up with more suggestions, maybe an open day when we can all come and play with it.

I think that one sticky haydog will need a bit of attention. I adjusted the stripper arms - they looked good to me, but maybe an experienced baler doc would give em a tweak. I've been offered more grass to cut, but they want it cut in September and it's on a N facing slope. Might just work out if we get a massive high pressure but I'm pretty dubious!

Cheers!

Any ideas ,
ties perfect ,but the ends of string cut too short ,and knot pulls out , only one knotter , does itb🤔
I'd advise a little less tension on your twine disc retainer claw to leave longer ends, and perhaps tighten your bill hook cam a touch to pull knots tighter before releasing. Always make sure you have good twine tension up to needle and out of twine box.

Either the needle needs adjusting, is it feeding far enough? need to measure and be very careful on that one, or a handful of expensive bits! assuming a rasp knotter, then worm drive to twine disc needs turning slightly so that the twine disc holds a longer tail, if that makes sense.

First check knotter shaft end float as stated in various suggestions to check put a spanner on the twine disc worm nut and try to tighten if there is too much end float you will see a gap appear between the small gear and large gear on the knotter shaft, follow these directions as shown, also check all ceramic eyes the strings go through unless they are new there will be grooves in them swop them over to another position so string will be running on an unworn part you will not be able to turn them around as they have flats to keep in position , do not overtighten u/bolts or eyes will break, and make certain the needle ones are aligned with needles eyes, short ended knots are caused by incorrect twine disc timing being too far retarded but don't alter till end float has been checked, chances are you will find small gear on worn drive worn like a banana if original put new ones on they are held on by a mills pin so fairly easy to get off...
