KV geo-spread weigh cell failure.

Just wondering if anyone has had an issue with a weigh cell failure on a kv spreader?

I’ll try and keep this short,

Parked the spreader up the other night with a couple of hundred kg still in the hopper as I was carrying on spreading first job next day, fire it up following morning and the seal has gone to zero!

Put it down to a glitch and spread it out zero’d the scale and all was fine, yay job sorted:). Anyhow had to spread away from the yard this morning so loaded everything up and move to other yard, switched the screen on and hopper reading about 70kg when empty! Went to zero it and the scale goes to -1000kg:eek: and won’t reset:banghead:

After a lot of messing about I found if I move the wire going to the back l/h cell the scale goes crazy, spoke to dealer and they said they’ve never had to replace one:cautious:.

Think it’s still just in warranty (think kv give 2years now?) so waiting for a response from dealer as to when they can get parts and sort it.

Apologies for going on a bit.

At least I Know I’m not the only one then, although I’m not sure if that makes me feel better or worse .

One of the few things that I’ve never had a problem with on my spreader. Can’t say the same for the rest of it.
What sort of problems have you had @Steevo ? People don’t normally have a bad word to say about the kv! Be interesting to know what to look out for or if there’s something that needs checking regularly.

Thanks for the replies guys(y)

Just hooked up my spreader this morning and same thing happened. Empty hopper was reading 351kg. Tried to reset the value to zero and it went to -1000kg. Disappointing. Did you find out if it was definitely a weigh cell?

Just the joys of a secondhand machine! One that looked tidy but I have since learned has been pulled apart and put back together badly by previous user. Franchise dealer I bought it from won't be having any of my custom again.

I’m fairly confident it is, if I move the wire in the end of the cell the weight is all over the place. It’s looking like it may be just still in warranty so wait to hear from the dealer today. Obviously I’d like to be up and running ASAP with this good weather!

Weigh cells on a fert spreader is not the best combination, I just have the KRM calibrator thing so only needs the "electric" ram to stay calibrated and all is well... as long as an accurate calibration for the fert is entered.

Phil, nip over to the quick fixes, bodges and creations thread and a quick read will learn u to use bit of baler twine to bend wire in right direction to get you going! :censored:

From the “Kuhn Axis weigh cell broken” thread last week....
usually wiring as you say pretty simple fix, but it seems with the loader/spreader type cells they are normally double ended shearbeam type and that is rarely a fatigue issue, normally its failure of the sealing which in turn leads to failure of the wheatstone bridge internally, sounds like a simple fix but these are potted and thermally sealed onto the loadcell substrate and to remove and replace with correct transducer assembly is a nightmare.its not a simple case of putting replacement resistors in(they dont fit) and its naerly impossible to get them placed accurately into the cell itself.

New cell ordered £400! Maybe warranty but not sure at this point as the second year has to be applied for apparently:banghead:

Got ours going again this evening. The problem is with the geometry sensor in the center of the machine. It works along with the 4 weigh cells. Ours had a broken wire running to it. It had rubbed on one of the bolts holding the guard in front of the discs. We repaired the cable, calibrated and the machine has worked perfectly.

Update - dealer came and replaced the weigh cell yesterday morning and calibrated it. All seem to be sorted now just need some dry weather then I can get caught up again! Have to admit though I’m a little bit miffed at how long it took them to sort it:mad:, however they probably didn’t see it as a priority after the weather turned nasty! Just hope it would have been sorted quicker if it had stayed dry:cautious:

I just had to get 2 new actuators for the width on mine it took them a bit too long for my liking but got it sorted in the end .
