Last wheat N

140 kgs to date, with last dollop of 100 kgs about two weeks ago. Crop not looking massively hungry, although thirsty in places.

When would most people apply the last 100 kgs? At flag leaf, or a set number of weeks after N2?

I never really know.

I'm using urea, just done the second main split and keeping my fingers crossed this rain actually gets here. I'm concerned this year that leave it till later and there'll be no water to wash it in.
Still got protein dose to do though.

The last time we had a dry spring like this i thought i would try a liquid protein dose. Ended up with 15%protein as last solid dose obviously ended in ear too when rain finally arrived

Not liquid, warburtons don't allow it, I normally apply the last solid bit at flag. Sometimes combine the protein and last main split if I've been a bit delayed.

L2 is tipping out here, and with no significant rain on the horizon mine will be going on at the end of the week ( solid AN )

Later N is only needed for Quality, N for feed should all normally be on by end of April.

Difficult year for Urea users, I guess its either all on or the last app is sat in the shed waiting for rain ??
Only brave enough to use Urea for early applications here.

None of us know in years like this.
If you're using AN or liquid then I can't see any reason to wait, we're probably past the growth stage where excessive straw will be encouraged. I presume you've had some rain in the last 2 weeks otherwise you're wheats only got access to the first 40kg so far ?
It is a worrying year to be using Urea (which I do) because in this situation, the normal approach would be to wait until rain is guaranteed but that could be mid May this year - who knows. I have hedged my bets by doing some with Urea on Monday, leaving some and using up some old AN on the rest. We had 1mm in a shower yesterday and might get a bit more this week. I don't think volatalisation will be too bad at the moment as its cold and there's a decent crop canopy.

We have been on it this week - a little bit earlier than ideal really but the showers about this week make it a better chance to apply N than T1 (next week)

also doing spring barley and spring oats

we use no AN all urea and AS - I honesty think it makes no difference (other than to the bill !)

You're Liquid though ??
Totally different situation.
Solid Urea, on high Ph chalk soils (here) in a dry and mainly warm spell would tend to lead to volatalisation and losses.

Just wondering how people on similar chalk to soils to me use solid urea in a spring like this ?
The Urea v AN savings were big early on last year, but it's possibly risky on this soil type ??

I use a few artic loads early on in the season.

only way to find out is try some and measure the difference ?

most of the urea volatilisation fears have routes back to when the UK government has political agenda to encourage AN use, I think they were somewhat exaggerated at the time

Last year I'm sure would have seen no difference.

This year ???

Yes maybe I should try a field of all urea to see.

The saving wasn't so great when I bought my last N though.

Got me thinking now whether to use some liquid for last dose, but have zero experience,

What product and rate would i need for 70 kg N/ha?

Would my sprayer cope, it has IIRC 1/2 inch lines, and 280 l/min diaphram pump

200 L/ha of a bought in Omex or Yara product could get you that amount on

cant see why any sprayer wouldn't cope with that

you will need stream bars or fert nozzles of course

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
