with the current situation of spot price on the floor and cow prices following trend does anybody know of anyone who might be thinking of leasing any of their cows?

Yes, I have the opportunity to increase, it was the fist thing I checked.

I'd agree with that, however it is a farm specific situation otherwise I wouldn't be looking for extra cows. this isn't my first rodeo.

Can someone please explain to me how leasing a dairy cow would work? In my mind it seems a host of unknowns you can't really quantify? How long is it going to live, what happens it if goes 3 quartered, is a reactor etc? Is the rent less as each lactation passes or is it based off how much milk it gives or what?

I thought owning the cows was often a large part of the equity the owner had in his business, for tenants it might be near enough the only thing he has in it?

They’d almost want to be for nothing in the current climate, might as well buy otherwise.

If cows are as you say cheap, just buy them. Cheap cows and cheap money. Surly work out cheaper than leasing

The 8 weeks clears the spring peak so I thought it safe that it certainly wouldnt be wanted then.
A lot can change in 8 weeks but your premise is probably correct that it wont be wanted after.

However it appears his buyer is happy to take it now.

we are currently 'under quota' by about 750 litres a day, a friend is being told he has to cut production, or some days, he will have to dump, they keep changing ideas, at the moment, his is a cream orientated contract, and we are talking. what the outcome will be, we don't know, but even at worst, we have plenty of calves, that could be kept on milk, which, for us, would be very cheap, and easy.
