Leaving machines running when not in use

The "fuel guru" at a firm I worked for said anything more that ten seconds at traffic lights and you'd say fuel by switching off-this was for all classes of HGV.

At the same firm, the workshop manager would switch his car ignition off every time he was going downhill-even on motorways!

Not sure if the same is true in Ag spec engines but stop starting all the time is causing a lot of oil dilution in the car industry which is leading to premature engine wear or even complete failure in some cases . The theory being every time you stop an engine a little bit of unburnt fuel gets left in the cylinder which seeps past the rings into the sump , normally you would only stop and start your engine once per journey but now it may happen 10 or more times depending on where you are driving

If machines weren’t meant to be run with no one in the cab there would be a seat switch or something to shut the engine off whenever you got out.

Furthermore why bother to fit external linkage controls for hitch on off duties as they only work with engine running.
