Are there any good but light weight root trailers on the market?
We have 14t Bailey root crop trailers and they weigh 6.5t empty , which seems a lot of dead weight to be hauling around if we don’t really need the strength, as they are only hauling grain and potatoes.

This does not make any sense to me. Just take a look at a 30 year old Marston running on a smaller chassis and 80x80 square axles with ag brakes. Basically they are all became knackered when they we used as a modern trailer. When I say modern trailer I mean they are suddenly doing 50km/hr on the road instead of 30km/hr. Heavier loads put into them such as more soil with the potatoes. We certainly harvest more soil today than we did 30 years ago for some reason. Its extra weight and speed these trailers were not made for.

They are the trailers that weigh around 4-5t which is what your looking for. I doubt you'll get a manufacturer to make you with any kind of warranty because its clear to see what's going to happen to them.

For longevity and ability for his speeds you need strength. You can't have strength without weight, so your only option is to look at a trailer made from Hardox as that will drop 25% off the weight but with added strength but also added cost.

Larrington were making trailers with Alloy bodies but could not get the market to pay for them.
The weight of machinery is a self fulfilling prophecy, machines get heavier we need heavier tractor to pull them, we make worse soil conditions all round so more weight in trailer. Thus we need heavier trailers and bigger tractors and so ad infinitum
