Linseed harvest

Well so far we have missed the storms which to be honest is a good thing for our area ,,,, only just got going with the trio after some heavy rains over the last week , but by Monday I will be thinking about looking in the nettle bed for the combine to see if she's ready to chew of the linseed
So who's finished , who's had a nibble and who's being patient ?????

I've had a nibble on Wednesday, but it won't stop wrapping around the auger centre despite removing all the fingers except for 2 to help the crop into the feederhouse. Since then the weather has been appalling so the combine is parked up ready to have a go next time the sun & wind are in my favour. 60 ha of VT50 seed to cut in total for Premium Crops.

Patient? Nope.

I think @Flat 10 has finished a while ago.

What do you guys do with semi flat linseed? I thought about putting lifters in but that's just asking for trouble. Mine is leaning in every direction except upwards!

Patient? Nah, just waiting for it to be dead. Next week if there is any sun. 55ac to do. Would have cut a headland yesterday for fun but not really dead yet.

Have 25 - 30ac to cut for a neighbour, not sure what it will be like though as I've not looked at it He was going to burn it off on mon/tues so guessing middle of next week, 15 + yrs since the last and only time I've cut the stuff.... Any tips apart from wait for the sun to shine.

Any tips on cutting a mixture of flat and standing that seems to have a companion crop of fat hen in it. The flat stuff kind of goes in then the standing fat hen just sits and looks at you until you dip the reel in and get that all wrapped up! Had to take all the fingers out in the middle to stop it wrapping.

Sprayed mine with diquat on Tuesday, it's now going off nicely and hope to be able to have a go next week, weather permitting. All stood up nicely except where the cattle went for a wander through it!

That just moves the problem of feeding to the drill afterwards. I can't see long linseed straw flowing through my Claydon. I didn't think that stripper headers were any good in flat crops anyway.
Surely the fact that the straw will still be rooted will help it flow?

Does taking the fingers off work? We removed half and it didn't seem to make much difference. If we take them all off will it even get to the elevator?
Combine is a JD C670i with premium floe header.

Cut ours with lifters on and no problem from that aspect at all (some leaning - not flat), incessant central wrapping on the other hand.....! Not sure whether our glyphosated or regloned bits were easiest, think I'd lean towards reglone next time.

last year we didnt take any fingers out and it went a dream ,,,,, only thing we found on our C670 was that the fan speed didnt go low enuff ,,,,, ended up taking electric motor of and then adjusted by spanner to get wind speed down to about 550 , other problem on a JD reel is that the single reel tines at the end of the reel tend to wrap the straw around the end bearings on the reel ,,,,, best taken off before they snap off

stripperb headers are fantastuc in flat crops - its your best chance IMO especially with linseed

Cutting my Marmilade linseed today Sprayed with Roundup 3lt 3 weeks ago cutting really well no wrapping and that's with slight overcast sky, worst bit is loads of small unthrashed pods that over load returns so now I have top sieve at 3mm and bottom sieve at 5mm seems nuts but only way to keep small crappy pods out , think the reason for all the small pods is that flowering went on for ever so I think they are under developed pods with tiny seed in them and are very tough & shear off rather than thrash. Doing about .8 t ac ( I hope) mines a bit flat and lifters are fine. Cut 35 ac today and got 90 to go. Sharp knife and cut it as high as you can and try and only let the tips of the real touch the crop.

This is an unvaluable tool when combining linseed. Bolt two angle irons on the auger in postion 12 and 6 o clock then attach an armoured rubber blanket (6-8 mm thick) to the iron. Length of rubber blanket same as the width betveen the outer pins. Width. the rubber must touch/sweep the bottom of the header

It´s so simple but saves a lot of trouble. You don´t have to remove the pins either.

Good luck!
