Linseed varieties

Just wondering if anybody has grown both brown and yellow linseed (nulin50) this year together on similar soils drilled at a similar time.
I would be interested to hear what differences there are between the yellow and the brown as we always grown the brown Empress so know very little about the yellow.

Thanks

Avoid the yellow. Every year we grew it a disaster. Doesn't thresh. Seed coats very delicate. Over thresh and it will go rancid unless you get a lot of air through it quick.

It grows just fine. But bugger me never again....and we did it more than once.

@Brisel may have more to say.

We have grown linseed for 12 years. Over the years we have found Juliet the best .

We have grown linseed as long as I’ve been on the farm (20 odd years), quite a bit of it has been the yellow variety Marmalade. Not really noticed any massive difference between brown and yellow, but not grown them side by side and the year makes a big difference. Both can perform well, and both can disappoint!

I've grown Nulin (VT) 50 for 2 years. As @teslacoils said, hard to thresh & sticky, so lots of combine losses. Not early maturing either. If you're an experienced linseed grower then by all means try some yellow but not Nulin 50! The yellow attracts a premium over brown.

There are lots of varieties of both brown and yellow, to distinguish between and to say brown is better than yellow is being very simplistic. Juliette is a very good brown variety but I would be cautious growing it north of say Cambridge as it is a very late variety. From my experience the earliness and lateness of both flowering and harvest should be the key decision makers when growing linseed. As rightly mentioned above, Yellow does fetch a much higher premium and some yellows are more yellow than others and you will get the highest premium for the best yellow colour!

My Batsman is away now , first time with this variety, hoping that it will be a bit earlier to the combine than the Juliet I used to grow , not a big acreage , basically growing it to make sure I have seed for next year
