Livestock Mkts - past and present.

As above, share some photos and stories of memories gd and bad. The Carmarthen mart thread shows how integral they are/were to rural and city society. I missed nearly every Wednesday at primary as “I had to help Dad take a barren cow to Frome Mkt”. This video is of the old Frome Mkt from 1990.

Why have so many markets closed, less livestock or more selling direct
I can think of at least 3 within a short distance of here that would have been full of stock in tbe 70ts .now closed

Dairy cattle have for more efficient so a lot less produce more same with all animals I suppose. Lots of cattle go direct at all stages whether it’s farm to farm, slaughter etc.

It’s very sad how many have gone

TB?
When I was young it was something I’d merely heard of, nowadays there aren’t many farms around here that haven’t been down at some point whilst others have been down for years on end, none of them can support the markets and many that have been down and now clear carry on trading direct, having had to find new contacts for selling when down they tend to maintain these contracts in case they go down again.

Tarbert Mart in Kintyre was a favourite of mine in the middle of the village. Tarbert fair last Friday in July was great fun when I was a kid . Dad buying cattle, us kids down on the pier on the fair ground rides

Sturminster mkt, at peak, had 3,000 calves a week. Local to stur, Dorchester, yeovil, axminster, Glastonbury, and a few more, all selling calves, now, very few top 500 a week, stock numbers must have reduced, quite severely !

I’d lift 200 FR bull calves from Stur on a Monday!

My theory is chicken and poultry, in the old days people lived on all cuts of beef lamb and mutton, and chicken was a luxury. Now because of modern farming methods chicken breast etc is much more affordable and arguably easier to cook than secondary cuts of beef and lamb. 40 years ago most farms around here would have some cattle, now just me and and the odd other one . You can probably plot a graph with the parallel rise of the large scale poultry shed, with the demise of the livestock markets.
