Update!!

Pump back on, injectors blown out to 125 (whatever that means)
Timing is out so that needs sorting but the nut won’t shift and the old boy didn’t have all his tools, so the TEF20 is off on its holidays to his place so he can tinker with it at his leisure, have asked him to sorted a few other bits out so fingers crossed she comes back running and able to break in a straight line.

They towed it home decided to try and bump it whilst on tow, nearly started then bang! So it’s back in my shed and they’re going to strip the engine down and see what’s happening. Gutted as it’s going to cost a bit but it’s money well spent if it runs like new after.

Oh dear! I think your engine has been frosted at some time, these blocks were known to twist before cracking, and the liner and block tops show poor contact with the head gasket. The liner seats need checking and correcting and the block needs decking. Head may need a skim. Check that the head gasket is sitting on the liner tops, not around them! There are some incorrect gaskets out there.

Have seen something similar, did the screw in insert unscrew in the head and fall into/onto the cuff ring?
Or did it just drop a valve?

Not sure sorry, I came home and the guys had taken it to bits, they’re still investigating what has happened as the engine won’t turn now

This wont help lofty, but must be stated. The majority of this damage is down to the attempt to tow start. If the engine had dropped the valve running it would have stopped with much less damage.Being on tow, it was kept turning and has beaten itself to death, the fact that it wont turn now points to a bent conrod or perhaps crank!

Yes can’t remember what they called it (something brake??)
They are called "Cuff rings" and the ones between the liner and the upper ring have a slight angle to one side of them so they seat nicely together, put them the wrong way round and they won't seal. Looks like it dropped a valve then and took part of the ring out. A mess, sorry to see that however I guess it gives you a chance to go through the whole thing, so be good as new once done, just a pain to have to go through it all again though.

Yes that’s the one.

It is a pain but in theory it should run no problems when sorted. Anyone any idea what I should budget for.

Depends if the crank is ok?? I would have thought it would be with luck, 2nd hand one if not, has it had new liners/pistons? I dont recall, if not I would just get the kit, bang some liners/pistons in, rod I guess you will get a 2nd hand one, they do have weight stamps on them, a couple of letters stamped the denounce the weight, it's in the manual.
Guessing the head is ok, I see a chunk out of it but should be ok, I do have a spare head here that is original and in good condition if you need one.
Shells and mains and I would check the block is true, it may need decking which will add to the cost, would also check the head if re-using it, maybe get it faced.
I would have a wild stab at anywhere between £500-750 depending how much machining is needed, depends if you re-liner/piston it, if you're paying labour they'll be a fair chunk again on top.
When re assembling it the Cuff rings need to be just proud of the block face by a few thou but it's all in the manual and fairly simple stuff, they are an interesting engine to rebuild but once done seem very reliable, the 3 I have done are still going like the day they were made.

She’s finally in bits, needs a lot of new things and bill estimated to be between £1500-2000, money well spent though

Money well spent? Perhaps, but a large wedge is solely due to the incompetence of your mechanics, if you stay with them there is no reason to believe it will be better second time around. You need to send it to a reputable restorer, and bill the other lot for all the damage they caused.

The one chap has restored more tractors than I’ve had hot dinners and is well respected in the Fergie community, I lay no blame at his door, as far as I’m concerned it didn’t run before and had something seriously wrong with it anyway.
