hi, thinking of treating myself to a log splitter but not really sure what to go for , size power etc.I've been looking at hydraulic ones around £500, are these any good? Any thoughts and advice would be very helpful.
Many thanks

That's the type of thing I was thinking of, is it 10 t of cutting force and if so will it split a good piece of oak or ash?
10t force won't be enough for oak, hawthorn or knotty wood, i borrowed a mate's Browns machine and it struggled on some tough knotty stuff, my bro's 18 tonner can sometimes struggle but it manages it, it also comes with a removable cross knife too so quarters logs easily

Some splitters have wedge that is too big. Mine is 10 tonne and manages virtually everything including some very large, messy oak. It's all about choosing the place to start the split on some logs.

If you are sensible it will split anything.if you go for the centre of knotty wood it may struggle but if you nibble round the edges its fine.also better on a bigger tractor with more oil flow.its fine on the kubota but revving hard.on a six cylinder jd the tractor sounds like a bag of nails after about 5 mins

I like this, it's cycle time takes less than 3 seconds and if it can't split the wood it smashes through it or cuts through with the wedge, I use all the smashed up bits as kindling for lighting the burners, I have had to give some knotty bits 3 punches to get through but I haven't found a piece of wood to beat it yet

I have an Oxdale and wouldn't hesitate to recommend one.
I've also got a bigger one that will split 4 way, still like the Oxdale and for the price they are very good value.

how much hydraulic pressure does a splitter require ? could be a daft idea but I have an old commercial ride on mower with a 40hp engine and hydraulic system but a knackered front deck that parts can no longer be got for - would it power a spliter ?

Yes but you would have to be careful with ram size as the pump wouldn't be high volume compared to a tractor.
Force = Pressure x Area
N = Pa x M

Edit:
A big ram might leave it slow, or revving its head off

Put a big enough ram on will work at lower pressure. Is this the type of thing your thinking of

Just to be different! We have a hycrack- brilliant tool will split anything as it cracks with the grain. Also very quick cycle times. Takes a bit of care to use without nipping fingers but that's the same with all types of splitter. Also work well on older or smaller tractors with poor oil flow.
Here's a pic on the 35 splitting some 3ft rounds 10in thick!

I have a 10 ton KTM splitter, very little stops it, doesn't need a big tractor either.
It was a bit slow on a Kubota compact but was good on an old Leyland at 1400 rpm.
Was really quick on the 200hp Valtra!

I have a KTM 10t splitter too. Stopped on a couple of knotty buts, but only because I was new to it and didn't start in the right place.:facepalm: Sits on the JD6920 on tick over (only tractor here) but is meant for compact tractors really I think.
