Lorry for agricultural use?

So I saw somebody the other day who deals in lorries, he had a 1985 leyland 6x4 constructor with aluminium Wilcox tipping body.
He says that it is agricultural registered. He said that it can use red diesel up to 50 miles from base. It also doesn’t require an MOT and is registered as an agricultural vechile so has free tax. I’ve searched the internet but struggled to find any relevant information. Can anyone confirm this please or provide any facts?
If this was right it would be handy for delivering our wheat to the local mill 15 miles away. TIA

But surely you’d be better going direct & asking the motor registry / department of transport / or who ever is actually in charge of these things ? Then you would get a single, correct answer

Surely, if a vehicle is “agricultural registered” or any other form of on road registration, then there would be paperwork to confirm that ? ? ?

You could do this and as far as I know still can many hoops to jump through old neighbour used to run 3 at grain time

I’m pretty sure it’s 5 mile from base.
A farm I worked at had one similar to you describe. Nice and comfy on the road between farms, it was slower than a 50k 200hp tractor to haul 12t (the lorry was 12t too) but when empty having the capacity to go 56+ mph you did grain slightly.
Very handy in an extremely tight grain store with above elevators mind as it was on 5/6’ longer than a 12t trailer, turning circle better than a tractor and you didn’t have to find a tractor to move it etc ( a lot like a trailled v self propelled sprayer scenario)

Know of someone who uses a tractor unit as a tractor with a basic 3 point linkage and a forager style pick up hitch and some weight where the 5th wheel should be. They tow a wagon style alloy trailer, but agri weight limits apply and same restrictions on red diesel use. I think as full suspension and air brakes higher speed limits allowed than agri

Hauling your own produce etc. No none agri activity same as for a normal tractor

It’s a nightmare , I put a hilux on limited use and had to go to city to argue with them and show them the rules get a supervisor etc before they would accept it , authority’s in uk are staffed with numpties .

Completely different. Mobile plant as are concrete and feed mixers that mix on site.

50 years ago there was a surge of them then there was a clampdown and it all went quiet.
there is a huge difference between registered as an agricultural tractor, which cannot be built to carry goods such as a tipping body. An agricultural appliance such as self propelled sprayer or Telehandler and a limited use vegicle.
all can run on red but , the last can only do a max of 5 miles per week.
I do not believe a tipping lorry fits any of those bills, if it is carting up to 50 miles on red.

however who polices these things today? Unless he gets stopped by VOSA and if he is half sharp keeps away from checkpoints he will probably be safe unless he has an accident and then with no MOT will probably find he has no insurance and if some one is killed it will rightly be jail
