Mag drill recommendation

They have their prices on their website like this
http://holemaker-technology.com/collections/versadrive

I suppose it depends how many holes you are tapping to make it worthwhile going for something like this.

If you are tapping 200 holes and it costs £50 then its £0.25 per hole.
If you are tapping 10 holes and its £50 it'll cost you £5 per hole.
ill hold my hands up and say i thought it would be a lot more to buy, normally new ideas like this command high prices, i was expecting a couple of hundred for the head and a tap tbh.
seems like £100 would get you going on 16mm drill and tap + head.
not bad if you were doing a lot of holes the same size altho having a range would get more expensive.
its a good idea for repetitive jobs.

i see they do an arbor for a mag drill, i thought that the action of the impact wrench was the key to it but it seems not.
they basically have re invented the wheel somewhat, just made an adapter system that ties you into the brand.
good marketing if they can shift them.

Another Evo 42 fan here, magnet would be better if it was a little stronger but otherwise a good drill. I've used 45 and 50 cutters in it for making holes for bale spike sleeves, but I drill these out very very carefully since the cutter can snatch and pull it out of line. A good cutter for the money.

if i had the mag drill sitting on anything that i wasnt too sure of its footing id whip out a carver and clamp it down.
just for that bit of extra insurance.

Had a steering joint break on the jcb, the magdrill was the answer to the maiden;s prayer to drill
the broken bit out of the ram on the machine

Im thinking about buying a mag drill, wont be a heavy user. The evo42 mag drill looks like the best value and a 3 year warranty.

what size of cutters should i get? What do you folks use the most? I could buy a set but maybe some would never be used.

it really depends on what sizes of holes you will need to bore regularly enough tbh.
if a set wasnt too dear it could be the best plan in one way.
at least its somewhere to start and youd have a bit of a selection.
i dont know how i started but i didnt buy a set i know that, i think i bought the more common sizes originally, 12, 14,16,20, 25 and 30.
since then id have 80% of the steps of 1mm from 12 to 30 and 5mm steps from there to 50 and after that id have 60, 70, 75 & 80mm.
i dont use them too often but i like a good selection for the mag.
as for lth of them, buy the long reach instead of the short ones, the long ones are more useful.

buy the std sizes and then pick a few up over time.
they do make enough on the bay at times but there can be good bargains too if you watch a search.

i have an automatic chuck on my mag, its invaluable, just twist and load.

I have an evo 42, its been used hundreds of times, can't fault it. Maybe a stronger magnet if anything. Bought a set of cutters then topped up over the years when they came up cheap on eBay

Cutters, just buy what you need when you need them if you can. If you do a lot of gates or anything, a 22?mm long reach cutter is excellent for threaded gate eyes, but not much use if you don't have stock.

I bought a second hand Magbroach at a sale which surprise surprise didn't work, but was able to get spares from Magbroach themselves who are UK based and very helpful, its been a good machine, would definitely get another.

I have a Magtron, which was made by the same chap about 25 years ago. I paid more for it than similar machines cost now! I took it to him for repair a few years ago. It is still in use, although our work has changed somewhat, so most holes we drill on site we use these in a pistol drill. Expensive, but outlast anything else when drilling glass fused to steel.

We got an evo, does what we need, there are better but more dosh.

things to remember, USE the safety chain where appropriate,, everyman and his dog are looking for the opportunity to cut the power to the magnet...
only drill through 1 thickness of steel at a time

I came across this in the Sheffield Star website the other day.

https://www.thestar.co.uk/business/...ng-dad-s-firm-to-heights-of-success-1-9642087

This more or less confirms that Rotabroach, Universal, Powerbor and Revo (both G&J Hall) magdrills are all from the same company now, from OSL whoever that is.

It says in the write up they are bringing it up to industry 4.0, whatever that means.
The factory looks like a throw back to the 1950's

If that's where rotabroach cutters are made its a no thanks from me.
I'll stick to JEI and HMT carbide cutters thanks.

Drilled 186 22mm holes yesterday with a Rotabroach cutter, the first as good as the last. You have to speak as you find and I have no gripes with them.
