Manitou 627 good or bad never had a handler just need it to sit at other farm to feed up couple hours day max . Two too see

They break just like any other:facepalm:

Pre 2008 machine probably more reliable?
2008 onwards have a few issues some can be fixed and cured but one you have to educate the driver as no cure but its failure can be prevented by the driver.

What should I look for apart from general wear? Haven’t got full details of machines but get the feeling they will be high hours

Axles, king pins, track rods, wheel bearings etc, rear axle pivot to chassis.

Engine timing case for leaks on 2008 onwards machines, if leaking its cracked.
Overheating signs, swelling of hoses, water trickle marks around thermostat and water pump etc, blocked rads.

Wear to all boom pivots, particularly bottom main lift ram and the self leveling ram pins bushes and self level ram mountings for cracks.

Hoses rub bad right hand side of engine under the rear wing.
Damaged steel boom pipes.

On our second.
First a 55 plate. Currently have a 13 plate.

Both been good machines.
Only major expense so far was on first one when one of the steering rams on rear axle pulled out of the central housing.
Wear pad shims fell out the back of boom on current one while still under warranty.
Other than that just niggly things. Float in fuel tank got stuck once. Air con sopped working. Can’t remember reason but wasn’t a major thing.
First one the button on joystick for extending boom needed re-soldering at one point to get it working again.

If you say so? generally okay so long as you keep the vermin out of them. although i do have one late 2013 MLT 627 in need of a new wiring loom as its melted all the earths in it but as yet not shorting out? customer dont want to spend the money, it'll probably burn the barn down soon enough :ROFLMAO:

Holy crap quite a list too look over could be a right can of worms would another breed of handler be any better than other second hand ? JCB merlo etc? I’m possibly better looking for an extra loader tractor to do my job at least I know more about tractors than handlers

Got one here, last time the hour meter showed a figure it was on 9,000+hrs, bought it 8 years ago and have done nothing to it apart from grease up/check oil and fuel up, been a good old bus but would prob benefit for a good service and some pins/bushes in a few places.

All the above points are not unique to manitou, just wearing parts, which tend to wear a lot more if not regularly greased where applicable.

What’s the issue that can be cured by driver education?

Abuse of the self level ram.
Dont tip buckets etc hard over and then lift.
Dont crowd bucket hard back then lower.

Puts lots of stress on self level ram and mounts and main boom pivot, which can then crack.
Also on 2008 machines onwards it damages the spool block making the tilt spool rod stick, this is a brand new spool block to fix and about £2300 plus labour and vat.

I lied cause there is a cure for the above but never actually seen one fitted! The is a mod kit manitou made for what they call "Persistent Offenders" :ROFLMAO: This is a couple of additional circuit relief valves Tee'd in to the tilt ram pipes at the spool block and then dumped to tank. Its expensive and looks a right arse to fit due to lack of room in that area.

Thanks for that. Not had that problem with mine, fingers crossed. I must be a careful owner ?
We haven't had a problem with that either but will re-tell the apprentice.

Ours is a 10 plate, done 3000 hours all here, a heater pipe went, new fuel pump, several little tiny wires in the wiring loom have had to be re-insulated, soemtimes on hot days the third service sticks. Mine is the low set cab option on smaller tyres and that may have made the electrics more cramped under the joystick area where the problems have all been.

Apart from that it is a good machine, still on original tyres having spent the entire time on concrete, one burst hydraulic pipe and a new battery in all that time.

For any make of telehandler, before you hand over the cheque just ask yourself 'Do I feel lucky?'

Ace is the undisputed expert on all things Manitou, but remember he only sees the broken ones! A bit like reading the car forums - spend long enough there and you won't buy anything.....

This is true, apart from the "expert bit" all the popular manitous models i work on and there very few bolts i haven't touched over the years :ROFLMAO:
I could say alot more about the MLT 627 but there no point cause its all stuff that applies to any model and if people listen to it all they wouldn't buy anything:ROFLMAO:

I thought the mod would be a big electric shock up a bad drivers backside!

Remember i fix these things every day, if i worked on any other brand all the time i'm 100% confident i could tell many a tale about them too but i tend to stick on manitous which is why you asked for. Most independents/dealers like me wouldn't tell you the bits that fail and just say yeah there GREAT go buy one.
The MLT 627 isnt the worst handler buy a long way!

The self leveling ram abuse is a pet hate of mine and despite explaining many times to people they just DONT GET IT!
I fitted a new spool block to a 627 recently and explained to them why it failed, 4 weeks later and he is £3k or more lighter in the pocket i'm back there fixing a hydraulic leak and bugger me when i asked him to start it up and move machine he crowds bucket hard back and lowers the boom:banghead::banghead::banghead: Exactly what i told him not to do!
