Manitou 840

Bought an old Manitou 840 (1994) as a yard machine. It works well and is built like a tank.
It has got a large red light and a couple of switches on the left hand side by the shuttle lever (see pic). Anyone have any idea what they are for? I'm guessing something to do with safe load indicator - did they have safe load indicators in '94??

Yes your correct its for the very crude safe load indicator. Not sure if the red rocker switch was a test switch or if it silenced the buzzer? cant remember. Useless system as was just on or off and nothing in between. Dont know about the other switch with arrows?

@spark plug will probably remember more about them than me been as though he sold them new?

Too old for me too?. It is for the safe load indercator. Think the red button is to test the system. I would be surprised if it works at all.

Was one to turn the light off (so only horn bleeped) and the other to test --- SLI was simple like MLT626 of that era from memory -- sold a few brand new when they first came out - usual Manitou problem with compensating ram system - one day the two compensating rams peeled open the chassis like a tin opener where the rams anchoured! a local timber company had one and they could destruct anything - I can see it now coming up the yard with a log grab swinging on it and two wheels on one side off the ground - went on to do many thousands of hours, a very strong machine.

Thanks. So I'd probably be better taking it out and replacing it with a blank plate before it's Loler'd!!!

They were simple from memory - check for a fuse first - then have a look on top of back axle - where plunger goes through Plastic Axle Bush - if you can find a Manitou man locally to you from that era he may know where to look! It is not going to pass a loler with NO SLI

It's a simple crude system. Look on top of rear axle for switch.

If you wanted to you could buy the sli system off a newer manitou and fit it.
Be quite simple.
Just need to mount the box in cab. Put a earth and 12volt power feed to it.
Bolt new sensor on axle. (Might need to drill and thread axle casing if it's not got mounting holes) thread sensor wires through chassis up to cab. Calibrate and job done. Cost about £400 plus vat in parts.

You will probably find it was disconnected cause it was a pain in the arse! Its little more than a spring loaded peg rubbing on the rear axle pivot, with a on off micro switch mounted to the end of the peg to operate the red light and the buzzer.

As the rear axle pivot bushing wears down the switch needs adjusting to suit and it becomes even more in actuate the more wear you have due to the gap and the axle banging about within the bush.
