Massey 35 lift arms not going down

I had a small yard job to do today. So I thought that I would get out the Massey 35 and give it a run.
My initial concern was that the battery would be flat, but no, it started at the first touch of the key!
But, when I reversed out to attach an implement, I found that the lift arms would not go down.
I have moved the quadrant lever to all positions.
I have checked the back-end oil level on the dipstick.
I have placed a chain on the lift arms and pressed down with the telehandler, in case the arms has become seized.
All to no avail!

Anybody got any suggestions,?

Is there a diverter valve in front of the seat to the right that may have been knocked to a different position?
You might need to drain the oil down in the transmission and remove the round plate on the rhs to see if the control valve is moving out and in as you move the position lever on the quadrant. It may have stuck.

New developments.
I left the Massey 35 parked outside, not running and proceeded to do other jobs.
After an hour or so, I noticed that the lift arms had gone down!
I double-checked that the controls were set to Down and started the engine. The lift arms went up immediately.
Again, I checked the quadrant controls, the lever was set to Down. When the quadrant lever is moved the shaft that it is bolted to is turning also.
Something must be wrong inside the engine??

Just try lifting the quadrant lever a little off the bottom. The arms of mine go up when the lever is right down but they stay down when the lever is raised about an inch.
