Massey/fendt round baler

Recently we've been pricing up a new round baler to replace a lely 445rp.

Obvioulsy they've now been bought out by agco so we've priced up a massey and out of curiosity I said how much the fendt version. Without going into actual prices we were told it's £1600 more for the fendt version than the massey.

So that's £1600 just for some green fendt paint and some fendt badges. Absolutely crazy.

Buy the Massey then.

All kinds of things might effect the price. Most obviously is the timing of the factory order. A baler ordered in November and paid for by the dealer before the new year will likely be thousands cheaper than an identical one ordered in May and delivered in July to the dealer. Apart from the out of season discount for bulk orders for next season with a sliding scale to in-season price, there may well have been a list price increase or two in the interim period.

Secondly, if a dealer has five of one model and only two of the other in stock, he may well be inclined to discount one far more than the other in order to balance or reduce stock.
There may be some specification differences in an era when options and accessories are very extensive and virtually no two models are exactly the same.

It could also be that there are different discounts or gross list prices for the different brands, just as a premium for the name. I doubt it in this case though.

Lastly from me, although there may be other reasons that I haven't mentioned, is that dealers who sell both brands from AGCO are set sales targets which, if hit, gives them certain bonus benefits, such as discounts on signage and shelving and possibly on the machines themselves. If they don't hit their tagets for all machines and both brands, they don't hit the target for either. This may well incentivise them to sell one brand over the other in some cases.

As with other hot topics on this forum, nothing is anything like as simple as some people fail to imagine.

I was given the hard sell at a demo of the new Tornado, and they seemed quite proud of the changes made...
Do they not add up to much of a machine in real life?
Not from what one owner told me, latest breakdown was a broken roller after 800 bales. It's been a season of torture for them between the Lely, it's Massey replacement and trying to get contractors to bale grass at short notice before it got wet. I baled some for them with a Fusion 3 and they couldn't believe how reliable it has been compared to what they're used to. They'll go to McHale next year if they can get rid of the Massey.

Priced no last year, fendt was £600 dearer for exactly the same machine (tho the rep said he would sort 5 rolls of net to come with the fendt baler) but even tho they are lely balers I couldn't buy a Massey badged one ! Dad still has nightmares about a massey baler in the 80's ! It may have been a rebadged Vermeer ?

Now AGCO have got hold of it, I’m sure in time it’ll start losing market share and eventually it’ll as good as disappear from the market.

To be honest there are far better balers on the market, at much more competitive prices...

Did they do in many chains? Suspicion was they were sent out with the wrong type at the start.
