hi, having a bit of fuel problems with a 5455, he has changed fuel filter, but still does it, he cannot find a mechanical lift pump for fuel, does it have an electric fuel pump. ? If so where is it ?, seems to sputter when using loader, with back and forth movement, like as though it might just get starved of fuel for a second or two then away it goes, could it be the pipe down into the tank, with a crack in it or broken off, or a faulty connection to electic pump or something else?
just looking for some pointers on what it could be before I go look at it,

thanks in advance

It's probably got an electric pump, see photo, that's built into the top of the fuel filter housing.Did he? Change the filter properly , those engines are very sensitive to a dirty filter, be it on a Massey tractor or a jcb telehandler. So must have been able to prime the system after the filter change, so my guess is that the electric pump is ok. Check the o ring again, and maybe blow back into the fuel tank, just in case. My 6475 was playing up after all the the filters were changed, quick blast of air into the tank pick up pipe sorted it.

Tier 2 or 3? My Tier 3 has a manual primer pump on top of filter on r/h side, electric fuel pump is on the back of the injector pump, did you change the 10micron square filter?

Have had trouble with dirty fuel in my 5455 and had the 10micron filter last only 80hrs. You can clean them with aerosol brake cleaner if a spare is not available on a bank holiday Saturday afternoon.

The priming pumps on these fail quite often - but they are cheap to replace 😀
Also the fuel pump are not the best (the mechanical type) - Check out my old thread

Now then just an update on this, and thanks for all the replies of help, even though the problem was well off the mark with the suggestion above,
I got out to see the tractor on Friday, telling the farmer on Wednesday night i would be there on Friday it might be the fuel pump in the filter head, he phone local agent to see if they had a pump in stock incase i said it was that, they said if spluttering it could be the pump at fault aswell, following bits of advice above I checked it through, now as I am getting deaf in my old age I could not hear any sound of pump in filter head, I removed the plug and tested power and earth, all was fine, removed outlet fuel pipe and it must of been pumping as fuel was slowly but constantly coming out,and its up hill from the tank, so must of been working, now on testing the power feed and earth wires, I could only get 11.8 volts, this seemed low, tested the battery volts, it was the same, so what next,
Farmer said its been bad at starting, as battery was going flat, and had to use jump leads for a while, and he even changed the battery off another tractor that is a really good battery, yet to no avail its had continued to go flat over the next few days and back to jump leads, and was spluttering and nearly stopped with lack of fuel,
The alternator changing light was working as it should, and he said, it always went out once started, so assuming that it was charging the battery, but so must be draining it,
Well on looking at the fan belts, They were as slack as a hookers bra strap, turning the alternator when not under load, but once alternator was excited to work, it would just slip, but the belts were that slack it would not make the belt squeal,
I tighten the belts up, and he used it Friday afternoon and yesterday, and it never missed a beat, not 1 splutter, and starts for fun now,
As tractor and loader is used every day, he said that since the electric pump runs all the time, and its an 04 with 4500 hours on it, could I get a new one for it in stock as the tractor cannot be done without, so I have one on order,

Strange one this, as the farmer in this case is normally very switch on, and very good with machinery, and it has not at anytime got hot on temperature gauge, or alternator red light or belts squealing given any clue to it being the fan belts,
