McCormick Cx 105 xtrashift problem

Greetings from Kentucky. I have a 2007 McCormick CX 105 Xtra shift. It is in the shop with a problem. Here in my area of the U.S. there are few McCormick dealers left. My tractor started having issues that when you start it up and move it from the shop, and then get out of the cab, once back inside, it would not back up or go forward. No lights indicating an issue, also no reverse light when shuttling into reverse. If you leave it for a while and try again, it would work perfect for a week or two. My mechanic can’t figure it out because it’s not throwing a code to trace. I have seen similar problems here in 2014, and a person Mcman I believe had a wealth of knowledge.

please help. This tractor is great, but this issue is getting worrisome to me.

Have you tried looking at the operator presence switch that is in the seat base...faulty..broken wire?

A while since I had one, but memory suggests it could be one of the gear box sensors accessed under the floor mat.
think there are two of them and they stick in position
take up floor mat take plate off. Under this are two sensors screwed in to the top of the box. I think in emergency you can just short them out. This will certainly indicate if they need replacing

When I had the gearbox neutral switch issues the tractor wouldn't start, so I'd rule that out. Personally I'd go for a new shuttle switch, had that give intermittent problems, and fail.

Actually having re read the OP do you mean you get out of the tractor leaving it running then it won't move after getting back in, if so the I'd look at switch like the other chap said.

Thank you for the reply’s so far. Marshfarmer, sometimes I do, and sometimes you can be driving the tractor, come to a roll of hay, and have to stop and back into it. Once you stop to put it in reverse on the shuttle shift from forward to reverse, you would have no reverse. It would just sit there. I would turn the tractor off for a few minutes, start it back up, and then have forward and reverse again.

Mine sometimes does this. Stamping hard on the brakes cures it straight away.
Presumably a sticking valve somewhere.

Update: The dealer can not figure out what is wrong with the Cx105. McCman, no, the N light does not come on when this happens. Dealer said since it’s not throwing a code, they can’t determine what part needs replaced. It did it to them in the shop. They started it up and went to move it. When they went to back it up after going forward, it just sat there. No lights , no codes. After shutting it down , a few minutes later after start up, it operated just like normal. Mechanic said they did not want to just throw parts at it. They checked all the wiring and connections. Said it was all clean. They cleaned the magnet up on the steering console for the forward and reverse select. Checked voltage at the battery and said it was ok. So, who knows.

Are you using the "clutch"pedal when moving from forward to reverse?.....It isn't really a clutch...more an inching pedal....under the left side dashboard at the top of the clutch pedal pivot there is a proximity switch...early ones very tempremental and need adjustment...work on voltage drop I believe.. may be worth looking here?

Welcome back folks. It’s me again. Still have the Cx105 xtrashift, and the problem is getting much worse. I used the tractor the other day to rake hay. Went and hooked to the roller, and once I hooked up, the tractor would not go forward or reverse. I let it sit about 20 minutes, and it took off like nothing ever happened. Drove it a few miles to the field, I got out of the cab to adjust the John Deere roller pick up to roll hay. Got back in the cab, and again, it did nothing. Shuttle between forward and reverse on the steering column and it just sat and made a pulling noise like it wanted to go, but just sat. Went to get the old Case and old roller. About an hour went by and a storm was moving in. I got off the old tractor and climbed into the CX again to take shelter from lightning. I cranked it up to use the air conditioner, and put it in forward. It started moving. So I rolled about 6 rolls before being rained out. I drove the CX home, and backed in the shop.
I sent a video of what it was doing to a local tractor mechanic. He asked if I had recently removed the battery. Yes, I had. I had to fix the steps on the battery side. He said to clean terminals and check wires. I did this. I cranked it up and it worked fine. I went and rolled hay all day, not one mishap. Then this morning, I started the tractor, and it would not move forward or reverse yet again. After a minute and me turning on and off the front wheel assist switch, it went to moving again. I am so frustrated, and nobody seems to know how to help. I am thinking of just buying the expensive shuttle switch in the steering column, just to see if that helps. Any ideas?

Hello, just wondering if you were able to solve the problem? I am having a similar issue issue with my cx105, not reverse at times, no codes thrown up. Flicking the 4wd switch gets it moving again for a while similar to yours. It seems to be between the shuttle lever and the controller because if you put on the park brake when it happens it will beep in forward as it should but won't in reverse as it also should do so the controller doesn't see a reverse signal. These is a resistor pack in the dash between the shuttle lever and the controller but I checked the resistors and all measure correctly. All I can think of is a bad switch in the shuttle lever or the resistor pack is faulty but normally resistors will change their value if too much power goes through them and then blow. There does not seem to be any common link save the ground wire point between the controller and the 4wd switch. It's under the rhs seat arm rest pivot point and goes through the floor of the cab where a braided wire is attached on the outside to ground it to the chassis I presume or maybe all the way to the battery negative. Cleaned up the connections there but made no difference. Why flicking the 4wd switch helps is a bit of a mystery!

I'm interested if you made any progress. I have a similar problem with a McCormick CX110. I do get some error codes. I have been told it is the transmission controller. None are available from McCormick. I have been looking in scrapped tractors and on ebay for Sauer Danfoss MC024-020 controllers. The programming will not allow any to work as of yet. I'm still working the problem with little success. I am not yet convinced it is the transmission controller.

A new paddle/shuttle lever solved it in my case. The 110 is a bit newer than the 105, tier 3 engine too I think so not exactly the same. Still might be worth looking at a lever. Not great support of their machines if they can't provide a new controller, they aren't that old a machine.

Hi, is it a 'restyled' Cx with the 4 post cab?
What error codes are you getting?

The code is a 5040/4/5. I bought the repair manual and it refers to the forward solenoid. I replaced it. I found the wire has already been rerun with another wire along another path to pin 8 of the controller. I bought this from my local McCormick dealer. One owner.

Have you done all the checks that the error tells you to in the manual ?
Make sure all the earth points on the tractor and battery are good. Swap the plugs round on the forward and reverse solenoids and see if the error changes.

The error only occurs in the field after 1 -2 hours of running. The tractor can be turned off and restarted and run again for 15 to 45 minutes, The time it runs continues to shorten as it runs longer till it's only 2 to 3 minutes. I have not had it fail on any activity other than working hay. That it its main purpose. I have run all the test and checks from the manual. It uses the same ground for forward and reverse but only fails in forward. We back up on every bail we drop. Swapped solenoids on forward and reverse have not Swapped connectors. That will tell me if it is in the controller! Good idea.
