Mcdon header and beans

The vibration of the knife is enough to shake beans out of the pods when they are too dry, regardless of what is going on above or behind the knife.

I don't know what any manufacturer could do about that. Maybe run a much slower knife, but that would probably limit forward speed.

We’ve found losses in beans are much less early morning (5am - 8am) than evening (8pm to midnight) harvesting. It still isn’t perfect. This year beans seem to just sit between the knife and the auger and need more help to pull them in with the reel than is ideal. Flow much better where there are a few green stems

And the amount of dust ! FFS

i find the key with beans is higher forward speed auger full height height controll sensitivity set for higher speeds smooth driving 8 to 15 kmph
newholland header with a 4 chain feeder and slip clutch plates in good condition
after a full season cutting beans at the end of harvest the slip clutch can be worn and slips to easly
the plates are only a few £s

the beans dont have time to hit the ground
in thicker crop they get caught in the flow of the crop

Air reels look like they would be good if the don't just knock all the pods before the get past those air tubes, before the air can act on them or the knife gets a chance to shake them out.

Harvesting early morning works, though would probably help a lot of you can have second team to double shift the combine if you are going on harvesting other crops in the afternoon and evening. Would probably be more cost effective than buying any header with just one person to operate it.

I guess this is why air reels are a thing over the pond. Hopefully not a problem we are regularly going to have here!

I use the air reel on my 40 ft header. Night and day difference especially in lighter crops. The beans that come from shattered pods get blown back under the auger. Very dusty thou and I have to take the down pipes off for wheat and canola
