Measuring rainfall

I have a couple of rain gauges around and about but had a look at my gauge last night and it measured 10 mm, but I know that as most of the rain we had yesterday was of the horizontal variaty I can't see it being measured ,,,,,, how do they measures horizontal rain?

I’ve mine about one metre high. That said, 3% difference between 300mm and 1m isn’t gigantic when I’m only measuring for the interest of it.

We got about 28mm over the weekend, it doesn’t matter if we got 24mm or 30mm, it still gives the same crappy consequences....

I don't think it matters, in my very distant youth I checked a rain gauge for a met office station. The gauge was just a funnel gauge in a copper can. As long as the site is open, without nearby buildings and tall vegetation you get a usable reading. The drink had to come down somewhere after all.

Since sept I have found this much more accurate and suited to our rainfall

I have a puddle by the road by my daddy's house. If there is water in it then it's too wet to cultivate. Similarly, if the other puddle joins it across the road, we have had 8mm.
