@Kildare did you ever get an ml ?. We got a low mileage 59 plater 350 blue effiency 4 matic ,goes like tihs of a shovel , 20/22 towing ,and 36 rest of time . Soon be ready for tyres was wondering if any one put 50 profile on instead of 45"s .

Not put 50 profiles on but have put 275/45’s instead of the 265/45’s no problem as more choice of tyre at better prices and for what it’s worth been very pleased with Nokian tyres too, they do around 35k miles to a set.

Yes bought a 320 cdi.09 as well. Great power and comfort. Buy good tyres when you are shopping. There were cheap ones on mine and they were dangerous.have hanhook on now.good tyres.mitchlin better but more money. A 350 must be powerful. 320 is 220hp.

Looked at a 320 ml today, 118000 miles £1900,, the sprits were lifted, quick mental check on funds, then looked closer and it was petrol :(:(

Older versions, the ones with separate chassis but standard with two speed transfer box, either with petrol engine or manual transmission, go for a song. The diesel on those easy ones was a five cylinder common rail 2.7 litres, designating the car as ML270cdi. It should be fitted with a rather nice Mercedes five speed automatic.
Vehicle build quality in terms of materials and plastics used and the way they fit is absolutely appalling on those early ones. That was a result of over-zealous cost cutting across the Mercedes brand from the late 1990's to about 2005 or later in some models.

The second generation, the unibody one which today's GLE is based on, is very much improved in most ways. The 7-G-tronic transmission is just about the best there is and the V6 engines aren't bad either. The V6 were I think all 3.2 litres but an economy version of that engine had vehicle designation of 250 if I remember correctly. The very latest models have the option of a four cylinder diesel and may well have the 9G-Tronic, which is adequately powerful but like the four cylinder BMWX5 and VolvoXC90, the towing ability is reduced to around 2.5 tons I think [without checking].

The fuel economy from even large BMW and Merc engines is staggering, I was having this conversation with two BMW and Merc owning neighbours. I don't know if it is pure advanced engine tech, software, or the million ratio gearboxes but heck you can't argue with that amount of grunt and fuel economy, makes other marques look behind the times!!

You would really need to have work for one of these to justify having one.
The more modern suv eg vw tiguan are very enomical and with higher gearing very quiet.
Re running a older suv or newish I don't think there is a lot of difference in cost.
Buy new or year old there is no testing batteries or tyres needed for a while.

Older and it's 1000 to 1500 a year for above and repairs. Lower depreciation but element of risk too.

Yes I'm surprised by some of the figures people have been quoting in the 'manual vs auto' thread - my ML is a 3.0 V6 diesel, 220bhp, and I get 22-23mpg for towing a 14' Ifor, going out loaded with hay, returning empty. People have been quoting less than 20mpg for smaller engines.....all I know is the ML is very nice to tow with :)
