You're missing the point, possibly because this is being discussed on a political forum that masquerades as a farming discussion board.
Neither VW nor Mercedes are aiming these pickups at farmers. In fact, most VW or Merc dealers would ask a farmer to leave the showroom due to the smell of cow sh!t putting Mrs Winkleman or Mr Hughes-Stanley off from the business of ordering their new executive SUV.
These things have two real markets as I see it:
1. Lifestyle buyers, who want the image of a rugged outdoors type vehicle despite having no need for any of its capabilities. These are the same people who used to drive top-spec Defenders.
2. Small businesses such as builders, tradesmen etc who want a tax-efficient vehicle that also demonstrates to potential customers and their friends that business is good and they clearly do a good job.
Everything is only worth what someone will pay for it.... And some will clearly pay for it!
Depends on your tax status and how important p11d is .... oh and you wouldnt get an XC90 for that money!

I’d rather have an xc90 though
Big into your fishing?!Sense < Money
If I was going to be spending 40K on a 4x4 I would buy a Volvo XC90 and tow carp around with that.
Yep, the X on the side spoils itThat is one hideous looking pickup
That’s for marketing!Yep, the X on the side spoils it
Should be a General Lee style X thenThat’s for marketing!
a big engine and no 3.5t seems daft to meAs far as I know, the VW is now only available as a V6 with eight speed auto and full time 4wd. No low ratio box though and towing capacity is 3.1 tons. Which is enough for many people but not for others. Would be risking my license and insurance validity, so a no-go for me. Which only leaves the Mercedes out on its own. Not that I'm in the market for that kind of expensive pickup at the moment.
Many people may be holding out to see what Land Rover have on the boil perhaps? Most farmers can neither justify or afford such a machine when the alternative work trucks are approaching half price
Chelsea tractora big engine and no 3.5t seems daft to me
Have a look at that Navarra link @Cowabunga put up earlier. It’s cheaper than that. I rang them up, seem a decent firm too.I guess the orders for the X Class haven't come rolling in as Merc expected. I've only seen 1 on the road.
Price 2 weeks ago for a Navara Tekna plus metalic paint, protection pack (mats & load liner) & tow hitch was £22k plus VAT
