Met Office loses BBC weather forecasting contract

I'm alarmed and disappointed about this. Much as us farmers tend to bemoan weather forecasts I honestly think the Met Office does a great job of predicting the weather. It looks like the BBC have (or will) opted for a cheaper option which is likely to be inferior.

One of the major advancements as far as I am concerned is the fact that the forecast now changes or updates every hour (or so it seems). This allow me as a humble farmer to predict and forecast what might happen. This wealth of data is so much more reliable than sitting transifxed in silence in front of the telly watching the weather in anticipation; knowing that it will be hours before the next one

2/ 3 years ago bbc weather was always spot on, to the hour

now it will say it's bright sunshine whilst it's pissing down outside

Only got themselves to blame (UKMO), much I could say but won't.

Probably won't notice much change in accuracy as could still use met office data bought through the new supplier.

Feel sorry for those whose jobs put at risk.

Wonder if upper tiers of met office will shoulder any blame on their £250k per annum of tax payers money? Doubt it! Nests have already been feathered!

I wonder what the bbc pay the met office. I assume bbc was one of the biggest customers perhaps mod and airports pay more. It will be a big drop in income and it may limit investment to improve the service.

It's a government supported quango so the information is surely public property anyway ? why were the BBC paying in the first place for it ?
