Metal detecting help

I started detecting with a Viking vk30 great detector and found lovely old coin on the beach and that got me hooked. Great on dry sand.
Not a bit of good on the wet sand where the rings are though as the depth drops to nothing but a few inches when it settles down with a good setting. I can get two feet plus with the e trac and sovreign.
If you do some testing on wet sand you will be surprised at the difference and the best signals are the junk mostly. Dig any two way signal and at the lower tide mark dig everything as even modern 2ps have iron in them these days. Pull tabs same signal as gold rings, bottle tops, bits of can have to be dug to pull out the goodies.

Thanks for your replies guys lots of good info there,it looks like il be defiantly going in February when it's the lowest tide.
Also
Been doing some research on how the tides move things around and where to it certainly makes a interesting read.
And I have a few ideas to try,my fall
Down I believe is it's a garrett ace 250 so may struggle a little.
Like I said I don't really want to chase the new stuff even if it is gold/silver I wanted to find some old coins ect.
But it will keep me amused until I get a permission.
Nice advice though :)

The Garrett is a good machine but I've been told the coils struggle as they get bigger as its only 9v and not 18 as some of the very powerful machines are.

However this was supposed to be about you getting permissions not a comparison thread lol

Yeh the permissions have gone out of the window slightly I don't hold out much hope.
If I was gonna get one i would of thought it would have been before now.
Need to get out in the car and introduce myself I think

Hello just would like to wish you well with your quest in finding somewhere to detect I am in Kent and I have tried and had some success if you have a skill or something else to offer the farmer or landowner I am a welder and engineer and have given these services free of charge for the chance to detect there land and for me it has worked very well I have a good relationship with the farmer and have now got an introduction to another farm who is interested in the services I offer so what ever you have to offer it is well worth it and secondly always be respectful as it is a privilege to be on there land good luck
Regards
Tony

Lot o' bad blood over detectorists and also airgunners. Once asked a fellow detectorist about letting the farmer know about valuable finds and rewards and he said " farmers they are fecking millionaires and they don't need the fecking money! :(

I am surprised that farmers don't give detecting a try them selves.

I don't entertain them any more after someone on this very thread arranged to come to my farm and didn't turn up. I'd spent 2 hours the day before cutting long grass in one of the fields to make it easier for them. And here's another good reason not to bother: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/201...ed-reneging-deal-share-proceeds-buried-coins/. If a policeman can try ripping off a landowner, you can't trust anyone. Too many idiots and timewasters spoiling it for the rest.

I have suggested the setting up of two threads on TFF; one for metal detectorist and one for airgunners. Each thread would contain only a list of names and post codes for each individual interested in obtaining permission. Any farmer could peruse the list of post codes and if there was one close to his, or her, farm could pm the individual concerned. That is if the farmer was interested in having his farm scanned with a metal detector or his rat population reduced by an enthusiastic airgunner.

Despite thinking that the above idea could be a way forward for both farmers that may be interested and for detectorists that don't want to be mithering bissy farms, I probaly wouldn't take advantage of it my self.

It can be very relaxing and helpful for unwinding. Personally, I normally detect Crown Estate beaches. Often starting at dawn with only the sounds of the wind, the sea, and the cry of gulls overhead (when all the ner-do-wells are still abed) I find it most relaxing.

Talacre Sands in North East Wales is one of my regular haunts and the history of the place can be mystifying. Whether it is the hundred plus shipwrecks there, or the multitude of RAF pilots that used the dunes there for air to ground target practices; one can't help but be moved by it's history and raw beauty.

I've had a few on my land which is near Hadrian's Wall (Scottish side). They've been OK and respectful of the property but it's a bit of a hassle organising times, showing them where to go, keeping an eye on them, explaining to other people what's going on, discussing 'finds', etc. I've decided that if anyone else asks, I'll charge a small fee. Question is, what's reasonable?
Do you still offer this? 3 detectorists from cumbria looking for a day detecting ...could be a regular thing just 3 people if u where happy ...we would be happy to pay a small fee

No I don't offer it. If you read back through this thread, you'll see I arranged for someone to come up. I think it was meant to be two of them at £10 each for the day. I spent time cutting long grass in one of the fields but they didn't turn up or let me know. So it's been a flat NO ever since.

Ah sorry I didn't see that . Wow u went to all that trouble and they didn't have the decency to let you know.....well I don't blame you ...we are from cumbria so we have to travel if we want land that has history ...we usually have to travel 3/4 hrs to get Some where thank you for the quick reply ...if you ever do change your mind though we would definitly be interested and are not time wasters

I would suggest two sticky threads could be placed on TFF; one for metal detectorists seeking land permission and one for airgun hunters seeking vermin shooting permissions.

Those detectorists/airgunners seeking permissions would place the first three digits of their post code and some personal background information on one or the other of the stickies; or perhaps even both. Any land owners who were 'perhaps' considering allowing said applicants to work their property could then pm the individuals and agree on suitable arrangements.

What, I wonder, is the opinion of the mods; Clive@ ????

I also tried to arrange for a detectorist to come here via this forum. But after the first contact I heard no more. But then I am north of Inverness with only 30 acres. I do however have a caravan that could be available quite cheaply.

Had the same thing with ferretters. Didn't turn up after I had arranged to be here, turned off electric fences, moved stock, etc. Then another wanted to come at 4pm. Erm, no! Ferretting is a morning sport before the rabbits go deeper.

We simply can't be bothered with time waters. As for detecting on my own, tried that looking for lost equipment. I'd rather watch paint dry!:(
