Metal detector problem

Diverting the topic a bit but I've always wondered why manual metal detection is done with a small coil sweeping a small arc instead of a wide scanning boom as on a forager, anyone?

Check for fence wire or electric fence wire down the sides of the roller, you may have to strip, the roller out and remove the magnet , have seen the magnet mounts break around the retaining bolts and cause the magnet to vibrate which can cause them to trip.

I've just taken my metal detector out of it's bottom roller to send off to get it serviced. It seems that they can get over sensitive. Another problem can be caused if bits/filings of bearings get inside the roller.
