MF 188 PTO problem

Hello All. I am new on this fourm and i am looking for some information regarding a massey 188 multi-power i recently bought.
The clutch pedal dosent seem to have a ''second'' point for the pto so you have to just engage it at idle or Engine off. With no implement attached to the pto, the shaft will turn constantly regardless of the lever being in ether on/off position. I have not collected the tractor yet but from what i can remember the lever has just two positions ie neutral and on(our mk3 165 has on/neutral/land drive).
From the little bit i know about them: -The no ''second'' point for pto could be just clutch out of adjustment or damaged clutch plates?.
-Shaft constantly spinning could be pto brake worn/broken?
I was wondering if there was any 100 series pepole on here that could shed some light on it and if i could keep using it until next winter as it is without doing further damage?
Thanks, Michael.

Thank you Henarer. Hopefully should be able to sort it from the lift cover .
It will be hydraulic pto ipto the brake will be worn or warped discs causeing drag.
Does the pto stop turning when a shaft is connected and in neutral.
Yes, When i first viewed the tractor it had a PTO driven saw mounted on 3pt linkage. PTO was not turning in neutral with saw connected, once engaged (without clutching) it turned as normal and disengaged and stopped once lever was put back into neutral.
However, I went up to look at the tractor today to prepare it for transport as I am sending it back to my home-place in Ireland.
It did not have any implement attached as once started the engine the PTO stayed spinning all the time in both neutral/on positions.
Do you think it would be an expensive complicated job?

A brake is not dear its just like a little paw with small peice of brake lineing on and a easy job to do aswell irrc fitted a few to 148s not done the larger 188 type but i imagine its the same

With the clutch down the pto wont stop as its direct drive not through a plate
Sounds like the system is working correctly apart from the brake issue when not in use put the metal pto cover on and when a shaft is fitted it will not turn in neutral
Stopping pto at high revs is what damages the pto brake

from memory mf 188 tractors had independant pto unlike your mf 165 which had a dual clutch,as said above the pto brake may be worn hence pto shaft turning with no load,as stated above it may stop with no load when the oil is warm, just put the metal pto cap on for safety!!,ps would like to see some pictures of the tractor!!

Thank you now i understand. I was comparing it to the 165 dual stage PTO as i taught they were the same. Now i realise iPTO can be engaged/disengaged without clutch.
Yes the pto being disengaged at high rpm would certianly wear the PTO brake as its not would not be designed to slow the shaft down.
Thanks again for the advice.

And always remember to have an overrun clutch fitted to the pto shaft of any machine that needs to slow down when the drive is disengaged. As you say,the pto brake is there to stop the tractor pto from turning when not in use,not to stop the machine...............

But with the crap PTO brake on Massey's they never stop too quick, when i had a ford the shaft would just stop dead

Yes thank you that make since now. Thank you for the advice.
I will get some pics up shortly. Shes no oil painting as i think it spent a lot of time in norway so the cab is quite rusty. But it is very good mechanically. They are starting to get rare now.

Straight looking tractor, what year is it?
Not sure what year its as its never been registered. I should find out soon hopefully as i have sent paperwork to DVLA to get it registered.
As far as i know they were built from '71 up to '76 and i think some were built up to '79 for export markets.
The hour meter works and it reads 4990hrs, i would belive its genuine judging by how it starts and drives.

Neighbours 4000s pto would permanently run,had bother with both our 5000 and 7610 doing the same,699 was bad for it and both 590s
Yes seems to be a common problem after all. When I get it home I will probably leave it hooked to an implement where possible until we get time to look at it.
